Which Car Is Better To Buy: Compare Volkswagen Polo and Hyundai I20
78Compared and reviewed service network, parts availability, customer service, cost of parts, power and performance, reliability, service intervals, cost, features, inside cabin space, boot space, and exteriors between VW Polo and I20 and I have found that I20 is the clear winner.
I20 is worth every penny spent on it – why, read here:
Space: It’s roomy and can be compared with a sedan.
Features: Some features are first time in any Indian hatchback
Boot Space: Huge compared to Polo. Ford Figo < Maruti Swift.
Looks: Personally I like Polo looks but it’s subjective.
Engine: 4 cylinder 90 PS in Hyundai i20 proven as compared to loud 3 cylinder some odd 70 PS in Polo.
Maintenance Cost: Admit that Hyundai is not cheap when compared to Maruti but it is certainly cheaper to maintain against Volkswagen. It looks and feels bigger.
VW Polo’s plus point: European car manufacturer plus good appearance.
Polo is better car than the i20 only in the pricing. If you come down to service cost, it only asks for 8k for every service. It has 3 cylinder 75 BHP which is less underpowered and engine sounds like a truck. There are little features inside the car if compared with Hyundai i20. Except for build, quality, and handling, i20 is far better than Polo in virtually all the areas, right from space, features, engine, cost of ownership, resale value, safety features, etc. I20 simply pips Polo in most areas and is a better car.
So if you are still confused between buying Volkswagen Polo or Hyundai I20, then here is my advice for you:
- If you have deep pockets and can spend 10k or more on every service for first 3 and after that may be 5k around per month for just maintenance only, then you can buy Volkswagen Polo.
- If you will fit anything even just a fog lamp or a music system from outside the company, VW will void your car warranty.
- Performance wise, Polo only has 3-cylinder engine and 75 BHP but if you are a kind of a person who don’t need the car to get sluggish or bottleneck in between or feels like to race in the weekend with the friends, then you will be disappointed every time. In straight or on a track, i20 will anytime pawn Polo, Fabia, Swift, and Punto.
I am not giving this advice because I am a diehard fan of Hyundai but what I am telling you is a reviewed fact. I have test driven i20 and VW Polo and compared everything and just found Hyundai i20 winning the race. If you will ask anyone to compare Volkswagen Polo and Hyundai I20 for you, most people will say to buy i20 without any single thought. Test drive both cars and you will get to know it by yourself and then decide which car is better to buy.

Yes Purple Perl, you can blindly go for i20 as it has proved to be a good car. In my previous hubs, I favored Swift over i20 but now my outlook has changed regarding i20 when I drove it for an extended period of time while on a recent excursion. This car is awesome. One more thing, if your daughter will buy i20 crdi that will be better.

But the review picked the VW Polo as clear winner. But, I take your decision based on driving experience and having used the i20 for an excursion.

@Purple Perl, Ditto. Just two days ago, petrol costs went up from 58 rs to 63 rs and these rising fuel prices have made it difficult for an average person to maintain the vehicle.
@SK6, your two questions and my answers:
1. Is swift 2011 worth waiting for or is i20 is a better choice?
I think Hyundai i20 CRDI is the best choice till now. If Maruti increases the boot space, change interiors, and change the outside looks of Swift, then I think it will also be a good option but I don't think that Maruti will be able to do this in the 2011 Swift model, only slight change here and there will be done whereas Swift needs some major changes, as people have quire bored of seeing the old Swift now whereas i20 still looks trendy and hot. Actually it's appealing to eyes, which is just one positive point.
2. What is the difference between i20 sportz (O) and i20 sports (BSIV)? I am confused.
Brother, i20 sportz (O) means i20 sportz option and i20 sportz (BSIV) means Bharat Stage IV which are the latest emission norms or standards for latest cars in India.
From what I have learned regarding the option variant is that with this model we get an option of having wheel covers rather than alloy wheels making the car 15000k cheaper and same with other features here and there so actually option can save you money if you want some features or not. For more information, I recommend you to call Hyundai India or visit their showroom on your own. Best of luck.

OMG, I didn't knew that. That's terrific. Where our government is taking us? I think to hell. If they will keep on raising prices like this, one day will not be far when an average person will not able to survive.
I like the overall features of I20 too but being an average person I am looking for a TATA NANO. I am not sure if that is recommended, coz I heard it had major problems after it was used for some hundred Kilometers. Is that correct? Can you please let me know what your suggestion is?

I will never recommend a Tata Nano to anyone, it's totally a waste of money, instead of this if one does not have enough money to buy, then he/she should go for a used Maruti car from True Value or a used Hyundai car. I don't have any words to say for Tata Nano.

i have been reading ur reviews, must say they r really good and unbaised. Iam really confused between i20 sportz petrol, swift vdi new model, fiesta classic - clxi. As fiesta has also reduced price (5.8 on road).
my buying decision strongly depends on driving pleasure, comfort on long drives, and decent mileage
my driving per day is approx 1500kms per month.

Hi Soni, Thanks for a really useful post. I would like to buy i20 Crdi Era model, but the dealers here are saying that it is not available in production. It us strange as the info is available on Hyundai website. They also said that Hyundai is again shifting the number of gears from 6 to 5. Don't know the reason why so, could you please advise. I also found on internet that a facelift version will come in October. Is that worth too wait? Thanks.
