So the long summer holiday season is going to get over and your child is going back to school. Don’t you think that this is the right time to teach time management skills to your kids? It’s not only about managing time while doing school activities but these skills will help your kid to become a good time manager at home too. Nowadays, besides completing the homework, our kids have loads of other activities to do like learning dance, watching TV, hanging out with friends, playing their favorite sports, like basketball, football, swimming, and many more things. But most kids make a constant complaint, “We don’t have time!” The fact is that time is not less but we are left with less time because we don’t manage it properly, so it becomes really important to teach your kids time skills, so that they can balance and do everything they want to do at the right time.

Make a schedule

You, as a parent, try to fix a certain schedule according to the consent and comfort of your kid. Fix their time for playing, fix their time for watching TV, fix the time for afternoon nap, time for homework, etc. Making this schedule will discipline your kid’s activities.

Concentrate on one activity at a time

While learning dance, there should be no distraction in the form of TV, chatting, phone calls, visit by friends, etc. Same should be done when the child is doing homework, sitting at a computer, or learning guitar lessons. Distraction leads to wastage of time by reducing efficiency and the task which can be completed in half an hour will take one hour to be completed.

Make a daily “to do list” according to priority

Sit with your kid everyday for five minutes and make a priority list where he/she will write down what he will do today and plan accordingly. Important and urgent activities can be put on priority and not so urgent activities can be postponed. For example tuition can be skipped if a kid has to attend his/her friend’s birthday and he also has an important school science project to complete.

Keep proper room for relaxation

Time management does not mean that you don’t leave any space for the kids themselves. Contemplating on things, being engrossed in one’s thoughts, having a conversation with oneself is also important for the kids to think ahead and get refreshed, so don’t plan each and every minute of your kid’s time. Give them some time to blossom on their own.

Be a role model and a motivator

Kids do many things that they learn from their parents. If you are able to manage the morning rush hour sticking to your own schedule, without fumbling for items of daily use, and arrange everything in time, your kid will learn that how beneficial it is to manage time and will get motivated by your success and start following you.

So at last we can say that we with our kids need to make a schedule, concentrate on one activity at a time, and make a list of most important things keeping in mind leaving room for relaxation for the kid. These time management skills will make our kids much more disciplined, a person who is satisfied with the time he has. Also, same skills can be used by our kids for doing activities at school. So go ahead and teach time management skills to your kids while they are preparing for going back to school.
