Kausani is a small hamlet located in the Uttaranchal State of North India and is one of the nearest hills stations to Delhi. It is a heaven for those who love to feel cool air, chilling nights, the aroma of pine trees, but hate to visit overcrowded and heavily commercialized hill stations like Shimla, Mussourie, and Nainital. Kausani is far away from the regular hustle bustle of city traffic and crowd boasting a tea estate which is the source for one of the most exotic tea variants accross the world. Though most of the tea is for export market, still one can buy tea here which ranges from 1200 INR per kg to a whooping 17000 rupees per kg. I recommend you to discover Kausani on your next vacation to India as still it is little known about this beautiful place. Interestingly, this place is well connected by roads and can be reached comfortably. Kausani is just 391 kilometers from Badarpur Border in New Delhi and the major cities which come on the way are Ghaziabad, Hapur, and Moradabad.

How to Reach Kausani from Delhi by Road?

The road from Delhi to Moradabad is on the excellent NH24 Highway and is a straight drive. Though it passes through some small towns like Simbhaoli (famous for sugar mills), Garhmukteshwar, Gajraula etc. on the way, construction of well connected flyovers has made this highway free of congestion. From Moradabad there are two routes, one goes through Rampur, Haldwani, Kathgodam and merges there in the main route; however, this route is a little longer and passes through the busy towns like Rampur and Haldwani, therefore, it is recommended. The distance is 430 kilometers.

The best route is as you approach Moradabad and come at the end of Moradabad bypass, DO NOT continue on the NH24 highway to Rampur, you will see a left turn too, take it as this is the better and shorter route. Here you will pass through towns like Chaupara, Kamola, Bazpur in Uttaranchal and eventually will join the main road near Mallital where you will join NH87 for a while before you take another right turn and join SH37. This state highway will take you to Almora and subsequently to Kausani via Someshwar.

Roads are excellent though a bit narrow at places and are devoid of heavy traffic generally seen on the famous hill station routes.

  • Also, remember a few BASIC rules of driving in Indian Hills:
  • Keep yourself to the extreme left of the road.
  • keep honking on turns.
  • DO NOT try to overtake on blind turns. It can prove to be hazardous.
  • Remember one thing, in narrow hill roads, the vehicle going upside has the first right of using the road so if you are going downhill and see a narrow section of road and if a vehicle from the other side is approaching you, then please stop and let the other vehicle pass.

Fuel Cost by Car

The distance from Delhi to Kausani is 391 kilometers. but as one can assume, you would definitely want to explore other destinations too which are around this beautiful little town, so lets add another 200 kilometers of one side traveling considering the vast variety of choices to visit so the total distance comes to 591 kilometers. Let us make it round figure of 600 kilometers so total distance from both sides comes out to be 1200 kilometers.

Swift Diesel for your Kausani visit from Delhi
Swift Diesel for your Kausani visit from Delhi

Now, the fuel cost will be estimated for both petrol and diesel vehicles.

Visiting Kausani on a Petrol Car

Let us take an example that we go by a 1.2 petrol Hyundai i20 which will give an overall average fuel efficiency of 15 kilometers per liter including hill and highway driving, remember on highway, the average will be more but on hills, average will get reduced due to constant engagement of clutch mechanism. Now we will need (1200/15 = 80 liters of petrol. Now let us assume that overall petrol cost is 50 rupees per liter. so 80 x 50 = 4000 INR. This is the cost of fuel for petrol car.

Visiting Kausani on a Diesel Car

Now assume if we go by Swift Diesel and it gives an overall FE of 18 kmpl, then we need (1200/18 = 66.7 liters of diesel and let us assume the diesel cost is 39 rupees per liter so it will be 66.7 x 39 = 2601 INR) so in petrol car, we will spend 4000 and in diesel car, we will spend 2600 for the same distance.

Resorts, Huts, and Hotel Deals in Kausani

Kausani has a verity of hotels. Some of the famous are Hotel Krishna Kausani, Himalaya Mount View Resort, Hotel Sun and Snow Kausani, but left all these and checked out other accommodation deals on offer which were wooden huts located in the middle of the tea estate. The experience was totally different and unique and we enjoyed breathtaking views of nature when we woke up in the mornings. Dense fog and lush greenery were the norm to see every morning and the beauty of this place cannot be explained in words. Huts at Kausani did cost us 1200 INR per day. If you go to any of the above-mentioned hotels, then the average rates are somewhere around 3000 to 4000 INR per day though you can get some discount but we preferred to stay in huts for their sheer beauty and natural location.

Total Cost of Travel to Kausani

Now let us assume that we are four people, so approximate cost of food (excluding drinks) would be around 1200 INR per day, so finally we assume that four people visit Kausani for 2 nights and 3 days and stay in huts, then the total cost of travel to Kausani would be:

Petrol Car: 4000/4 =1000, Stay: 1200 (for 2) = 600, Food: 3600 (1200 x 3 days) = 900

Diesel Car: 2600/4 = 650

So with petrol car, the total cost per person comes to 1000+600+900 = 2500 INR only and with diesel car, the total cost for Delhi to Kausani tour comes to around 650+600+950=2150 INR per person.
