What are the effective home remedies for resistant head lice?
What are Lice? - Signs and Symptoms of Head Lice
Lice are small wingless insects that feed on human blood and love to live in hairy areas. Lice are not really dangerous but are annoying, irritating, and contagious. It is interesting to note that there are 3 types of lice that can live in a human body. These include head lice, pubic lice, and body lice. In medical terminology, lice are called pediculosis, an infestation of tiny blood-feeding insects. The lice start out as nits, then convert into lymph, and then grow into adult lice which are capable to reproduce again. Thelife cycle of licelasts for approximately thirty days. If lice are kept away from human body, they can only live for 2 days. Pediculus capitis humanus is the most common type of lice which is the head lice and is most common among kids. In acute cases of head lice, infestation can be generally found in the scalp but in severe cases when left untreated, the infestation area gets bigger and can cover some parts of neck and face areas. One adult louse has 6 shaft-like legs that help in facilitating ease of movement and a better grasp on the hair. As you are aware, the most important symptom of head lice is when your child starts to violently scratch his/her head with both hands. Other symptoms and signs of severe head lice infestation include tiny red bite marks on the scalp and appearance of white nits in the hair and on the scalp.
How lice infest our hair?
Most people believe that lice come on their own in hairs but this is not true because head lice are contagious and come from head to head contact with a currently infected person. This is the reason why head lice are mostly seen in kids who join the school for the first time at 3 years of age. Our kid’s daily interaction with other kids in the school and head to head contact results in transfer of head lice from one kid to another. It is important to note that head lice not only transmit via head to head contact, but can also transmit to people using currently infected person’s towel, comb, or hat.How effective are allopathic anti lice treatment methods?
Some effective allopathic anti lice treatment include use of pyrethrins like over the counter Pronto and Triple-X, use of permethrins like over the counter Nix lotion and Perlice cream and other prescription drugs including Malathion for only kids above 6 years and Lindane which includes many types of side effects. All these allopathic medications are proven to be helpful in lice treatment but carry some or other side effects and risks like Lindane can be toxic to our nervous system and some parts of our brain. Also overuse or misuse of these prescriptive and non-prescriptive drugs can cause serious problems. As head lice are most commonly found in kids, their end users are kids and you need to be very cautious with small children like two to three years of age.

Proven Home Remedies for Head Lice and Nits
In order to get rid of head lice naturally and to wipe the nits off from roots of your kid’s scalp, you can consider some home remedies for resistant head lice that I have listed below:
- Our house especially our kitchen is a great source of natural antilice home remedies. You can wash your hair off with vinegar, as vinegar has the capability of killing the nits in your child’s hair in only two days.
- Application of coconut oil as a conditioner to the kid’s hair is also beneficial. Vinegar combined with any mineral oil or Johnson baby oil in equal proportions can be applied on the hair. You have to leave this application on your kid’s scalp for an hour and then rinse off with a baby shampoo. Now comb off your kid’s hair with an antilice comb to remove all the unconscious lice and eggs from your child’s hair.
- Another effective and proven natural remedy to get rid of head lice is use of 15 drops of tea tree oil mixed with your kid’s regular shampoo. You can use it daily as it has no side effects with daily use. You can also mix one tablespoon of tea tree oil, three tablespoons of olive oil, and one teaspoon of eucalyptus oil with your kid’s regular shampoo like Johnson shampoo or Mother Care or any other baby shampoo. This mixture can be applied to your kid’s hair and scalp. After application of this mixture, cover your kid’s head with a plastic bag for approximately half an hour and rinse it out. This is the most important way to get rid of head lice naturally.
Listerine mouthwash treatment for head lice
This video shows how head louse, head lice, or nits whatever we call them are disgusting things to get rid of but her personal treatment had been Listerine Mouthwash & White Vinegar which really worked for her. Just comb and more combing to get rid of the dirty contagious eggs.
More proven remedies to get rid of head lice naturally:
- Also overnight application of mayonnaise as a conditioner makes it easier for the lice to slide off of your kid’s hair when you will use antilice comb after rinsing thoroughly.
- Application of a mixture of butter and lemon on your kid’s head for just about fifteen minutes again helps in getting rid of head lice naturally. You can rinse it off with your regular shampoo or for kid’s, you can use baby shampoo.
- In India, Listerine Antiseptic Mouthwash has become a famous natural remedy for head lice because Listerine Antiseptic Mouthwash includes some essential oils like thymol, eucalyptol, methyl salicylate, alcohol, and menthol which are beneficial in getting rid of head lice. Listerine is also effective when it is rubbed on your head.`

Have you tried these methods? How you feel now? Let me know if you have tried any other treatments that do and don't worked!Loading...
Great hub Soni. We regularly need to treat kids for lice. Didn't know of the Listerine method - sounds good. Thnks! Here tea-tree, lavender and Eucalyptus oil mixture is popular and spraying in school hats everyday helps. Also the everyday spray behind the ears and back of neck where lice seem to live.
Very good information. I will be bookmarking this one.
Thank you so much for this great information soni. It's always nice to learn about the natural alternatives to curing or getting rid of a condition.
You have some great tips here. Funny how reading this has made me itch lol
These are good tips. Surprisingly, the first and only time that I had head lice was at age 45. Apparently the family who stayed at the bed and breakfast before us had head lice. Although the sheets were changed, the bedspreads and doilies on the chairs were not. Vinegar prevents them from biting into the scalp while being combed out.
Nice Article Rajinder !!
I'm not sure if any of these work but I'm bookmarking it and giving it a thumbs up.
Great information. I should print this or something.
It's very important information. Thank you for sharing.
I had never heard about using mayonnaise to help. It's good to find a natural approach to lice. Great hub!
The mayo treatment is a good one. I did the following treatment to my little girl 6 years tree times every three days: (example on Mon then on Thur then on Sun)
1. Nix
2. A good anti lice shampoo
3. Mayo generously applied and left on for at least 1 hour. (if you like cover with shower cap)
4. Combing with a fine lice comb (rince comb under hot water after every stroke)
5. Rince with warm water
6. Wash with gentle shampoo like johnsons
After three treatments of above steps you should be lice free! Treatment takes 3 - 4 hours.
very useful hub
good information.but is losterine isreally safe?
lol i hope these work caz this is my 4th time getting it
i’ve used listerine and tea tree oil. the listerine works well.
Hi,
Awesome post. I really like this because my one and half year old acquired lice not to long ago. I noted that I couldn't use the over the counter shampoos that were available. This is a great resource for natural remedies and general information about lice.
Yes I have tried both mayo and regular oil in my daughters hair and it does work 100% better then the store products!!
I think mayo does a pretty good job but I'm not sure there gone and won't come back how do you make sure they can't survive? What can you put in your shampoo besides tea tree oil? thanks
Great hub! I've recently heard using a hair dryer is fantastic for getting rid of the nasties
An easy simple guide to get rid of head lice naturally.

i want to know how to get rid of glued nits on hairs
please help on this
is listerine mouthwash really safe and effective? How long do you leave on hair? Any instructions? Thanks
Great I hope this works thank you
Very good hub. Very formative.
All u have to do is
1) listerine all over the hair , for 2 hrs a day
2) mayonnaise on the hair while the listerine is on
3)denorex ,extra strength shampoo
4)put tea tree oil in any of ur shampoos
5)buy the lice metal comb
After u wash all this out
Take conditioner and comb , every day for about a half an hour
6) then blow dry the hair and all the eggs will be one as well !!!
7) cut at least an inch of the hair as well , to make it look nicer , from all the combing it can wear out the hair
I swear to u , in about 4 days u will be egg free , the first time , u do it all the lice will be dead but every day , 2 times a day , wash and do the same , and remember blow dry hair with the hottest setting
Also put in a spray bottle listerine , tea tree oil and alcohol and spray the sheets , bed , couch , school bag anything that u think might have been touched by the hair ! Any questions contact me at platinum1081@gmail.com
Question. Does the vinegar mess up your hair color if its been dyed?
really nice
Ok so my step daughter just keeps getting lice. We are tired of putting poison in her hair and quite frankly just can't afford any of the 'baby safe' lice poisons. Is there any remedy that is easy and cheap? My step daughter is 2.
It's even simpler than most of these entries say...I've got 3 girls with long hair at my house...and we've been through it 6 times over the last 15 years. I went the chemical method first...mayo, vaseline, oils, vinegar, doing 3 or 4 things at the same time or on the same day...and put my poor girls and myself through so much stress over it. They still hate mayonaise! Here's what works for us: Listerine! It kills the bugs!I think it may kill the eggs too...but can't be sure about that. You apply it to dry hair...completely soak it. Have your child lean over the tub or sink and hold a towel over their face---or it will burn their eyes. Make sure they keep a dry portion over their eyes...they may need to move the towel as you work. Leave it on for 15 min. I do 30 just because I'm paranoid...but our neighbors had BAD infestations and 15 min. killed all the living bugs on their heads. Just wrap their head with a towel that goes straight to the washer. Then wash their hair with whatever shampoo, and condition heavily with Suave Coconut conditioner. Then...comb through with big comb thoroughly...then use nit comb cleaning it with tissue (you dispose of) with every wipe. Then once their hair is dry...check through their head with bright lamp placed right over their head. Instead of trying to comb out the eggs...we think it is faster and easier to pluck the entire hair that has an attatched nit. Make sure you dispose of the "nit hair" and tissues in a plastic bag securely so it is not lost on the floor, furniture or clothing. Repeat this every 3 days. To avoid a never ending infestation...YOU MUST clean your house, vaccuum the beds, upholstered furniture, and carpets ALL THE SAME DAY YOU WORK on your head or you could just be reinfested that night! I do recommend either using a shampoo or spray every day that has a couple tsp. of tea trea oil added. We add it to our detangler. As long as we stay consistent with that...we don't seem to catch it again. Good luck! Don't worry too much...they are a nuisance, but not as bad as fleas! Seriously-they are not. Avoid chemicals-
Thank you so much I have been fighting this for almost a year now, and it's wearing on both me & my two daughters. Thanks to all those who gave advice!!
I am being driven crazy by head lice— I seem to have gotten infested (how and when, I haven't a clue) — and I'm all by myself. Any suggestions for how to deal with this problem when there's no one but me to comb through my scalp? (Hard to look for the lice on oneself!)
Boookmark(: thank you !
hope it works.........thanx everyone!
I was so skeptical about this Listerine remedy...but I was also beyond frustrated with all the different otc lice shampoos And all the prescriptions that were not working. They were expensive and I was having to use them at least every other month. My daughter is so prone to them. Its awful. So I Google's DIY remedies and came across several sites swearing Listerine and tea tree oil were my answer. So I tried it last night...was paranoid that it would burn her scalp or color her hair....so only left it in for 30 minutes. Rinse out and washed with her tea tree oil spiked shampoo and also bought her the coconut conditioner. When I was combing with a fine tooth comb they were all just dropping out.....DEAD!! And not only the bugs but the nits also. I was amazed. I hope after a couple more applications they will be long gone. And I hope oil helps prevent a reoccurance....well we will see...
I have tryed everything. until i got to this page im hoping it will work. I have very sensitive skin and i hope it doesnt hurt to do it
I have also tried all the lice shampoo's at the stores with no luck. This is something you can't talk about openly, not even to family. I have been fighting these things for months.I have been thinking that I just haven't been able to kill them in the house and car and then get reinfested, but I may not have killed them all from my hair. I will try the listerine, and have already put tea tree oil in my shampoo and conditioner. Hope it works. Thanks for the comments.
AMMENDMENT TO MY LAST LONG COMMENT: Listerene works...however...we discovered with our neighbor's cases that were pretty bad, that it helps to also cover the head with a plastic bag snuggly, leaving it on for 30 minutes during the treatment. We did i twice on a couple of the kids. It did the trick (after the first session killed some, but left some, maybe we just didn't soak their hair entirely, I don't know. We also added 1/2 a dropperfull of tea tree oil to the listerene, and to their shampoo they now use for extra measure. To hopefully help reinfestation, we added tea tree oil to a detangler we mist their hair with every day before school. Additional NOTE: this kills some of the nits...but not all for some reason. It is still important to repeat this treatment and pick/comb through hair regularly that week. I've also discovered...you only need to clean areas of your house where the lice victim sits or sleeps...or things they wear or snuggle with. You don't have to wash all their stuffed animals up on shelves...wash everything in your drawers & closets like I did. whew! Good luck! ALSO...it didn't burn anyone's skin...only eyes if it gets in there. We did 10 people. It feels nice and tingly fresh, and then your hair is stripped super clean and it makes it extra shiny! Do shampoo right after tho...if you just rince the listerene out good and let it dry it dries out your hair and makes it rather dry looking.
Can I use the listerene on my 14 month old daughter I found out a few days ago she had them I used dawn dish soap I think that worked for the living ones but must not have for the nits it is so sad a 14 month old gets them I had to watch my mother deal with them on my sister and mostly me but they need to be doing something better in schoo considering my daughter don't go to school but she got it from my fiances sisters kids i even got them a few months back from the I got rid of them by dying my hair lol
Question??
This might sound stupied but do u use the mayo that u eat and the vinegar

The mayo sucked I've had this problem since I was in the fifth grade and now I'm almost a junior it seems Luke you'll never get them to go away
Lots of great ideas but how do I know which Listerine to buy? There are lots of different types. Plus, I wonder if the store brand Listerine would work as well to help with the cost?
I am also wondering about the Listerine treatment. It says to treat with the Listerine and conditioner steps every 3 days. For how long? Is it for a week? 2 weeks? Forever? Help please! I am also wondering the answer to the question above.
using mayo right now. Going to look for some listerine once I wash out the mayo. Then get the tree tea oil shampoo and suave naturals coconut shampoo or some olive oil as coconut oil and olive oil destroys the skeleton of the bugs and kills them. I wonder if listerine in a spray bottle will kill lice on furniture? There is a spray and preventative that uses different essential oils online. You can use it to spray and to put in your shampoo.
I have used baby oil, vasoline and shower caps overnight and I think viniger after wards to loosen the nits or the enzyme stuff. I have used nix and prescription stuff. I had four teen age girls with long hair and spent all day nit picking one hair, I swear, at a time. What didnt work. Nix and any other chemical poisen. What did work, the viniger I beleive helped, the enzymes helped. the vasoline worked with shower cap overnight. Need to wash it out with dawn soap and then it still is greasy. Did this every to every other day, daily cleaning everything you can think off and lots of laundry, bagging items I couldnt wash.
;( i am suffering with head lice i badly want to get rid of it ! my friends have it i try getting rid of them too! i always use a medicine but just 1 or 2 days i get them again they wont even stop! and now i have more than enough in my head! we dont use mayonese either tee tree oil to put on my hair! pls help

Good hub you've made here, Soni. These methods you outline here will work, and I have to accept I have learned a lot from your hub here.
In very poor communities where one parent may be having eight to ten children, they may not have much time and money to take that kind of care to their children and perhaps a simpler solution that will cost nothing would be preferred by them.
I was wondering if clean cutting the hair would do?
