The scientific name of eucalyptus is eucalyptus globulus. According to natural medicine and aromatherapy, there are many health benefits and healing properties of eucalyptus aromatic tree which I will describe in detail in this article. Before doing that, I will give you a brief history, symbolism, origin, and distribution of eucalyptus and its oil which has numerous health benefits. As you may know, eucalyptus oil is one of the most widely used essential oil by millions of people around the world on a daily basis. What makes eucalyptus so important is the fact that almost all respiratory conditions can be treated with eucalyptus. Eucalyptus is one of the widest grown and fastest growing trees in the world. It grows up to a height of 100 meters. The enormously large space occupying roots of eucalyptus absorb vast quantities of water so it needs a lot of water to grow. Eucalyptus trees have been planted since ancient times in malaria infested swamps in order to dry the soil due to its enormous water requirement and purify the air at the same time with its highly aromatic leaves that are blue-green in color and are heart shaped when are young and turn long and lance shaped at maturity. There are approximately 200 species of Eucalyptus. It is also interesting to note that the famous tea tree oil that is utilized by almost all natural product manufactures in mostly all natural products like natural shampoos, oil, etc. comes from the same family, Myrtaceae. About 50 species of Myrtaceae family provide valuable oils, some are therapeutic and some are beneficial to the industry. It is also interesting to note that eucalyptus essential oil when massaged has a refreshing aroma that gets penetrated and has stimulating effects on our body.

History and Symbolism of Eucalyptus Globulus

"Eu" and "kalypto" words are of Greek origin and they mean "good" and "covered" which is in reference to their stamina. The word "globulus" means a "small ball" referring to button-shaped fruit of eucalyptus. The Australian eucalyptus trees were the first trees which brought essential oil that has been used medicinally.

Origin and Distribution of Eucalyptus

Eucalyptus has been native to Tasmania and Australia. Eucalyptus was introduced in the Europe as an ornamental tree in 1788. It was in 1850s when the French government sent seeds to Algeria in order to drain out wetlands infested with malaria mosquitoes. This plantation of eucalyptus trees for draining out malaria infested swamps showed positive results because a large amount of water was required to grow eucalyptus tree in the ground which helped in total drying out of the soil and preventing the proliferation of disease-transmitting mosquitoes, which usually use these types of wetlands as "breeding grounds". Since that time, seeds of eucalyptus spread across the globe and its trees naturalized in almost all temperate areas of the globe.

A large amount of eucalyptus trees are planted to dry up the soil and eradicate malaria infestation from wetlands and swamps.

Great information. I always buy eucalyptus sweets when I have a cold. I am not sure how much they work but they make me feel as if I breathe a little easier.

Great article. The photos made me homesick though. I used to live right next to the national forest full of beautiful eucalyptus trees, and our yard would be host to lots of parrots who love some of the flowering varieties.

Thanks,

Kez:)

Eucalyptus was probably the first essential oil I've ever used - when my kids had upper respiratory issues. It worked like magic and I still keep this herbal essential oil around at all times. It feels very stimulating to me.
