This is the best place for college students to eat out and is not just like food available in Nirulas and McDonalds but it tastes unique and different. North campus with its burgeoning population of college students has become the natural capital of street food in North Delhi. Here are three must-visit food joints near North Campus that I have tried and you should try:

Bhelpuri at Patel Chest University of Delhi

If you want to have the absolutely delicious bhelpuris you have ever had, then you need to visit the silver-haired white-kurta'ed man (I don’t remember the name) who sets up his stall right next to the Patel Chest Bus Stop where practically all the University Specials start from. But beware as his prices have been shooting up. What used to cost just Rs. 12 in my undergraduate days will now leave you out of pocket by an unprecedented Rs. 25 but it’s worth your money.

Chacha Di Hatti in North Campus Delhi

Anybody who has studied in North Campus would feel justifiably insulted at being given the directions to "Chacha Di Hatti", the little hole-in-the-wall whose chole bhature the local criminals swear on in court. I had the privilege of having a plateful a few days back for Rs. 25 and you can get a plate of two "alu bhature" and chhole (regular bhaturas come Rs. 12 a plate). The “alu bhature” were like a cross between bhature and the best alu paranthas I have ever eaten (at a little joint called Calm Cafe, in Summerhill, Shimla) lightly coated with semi-mashed potatoes, sprinkled with just a little red pepper, and best had with a plate of yoghurt and a dollop of butter. And so dry and light on the tummy that you are left a little perplexed, and somewhat reassured when you notice the light coat of oil on your fingertips.

Driving directions to reach Chacha Di Hatti

Ask for Bungalow Road, the main road for the Kamla Nagar market, with its McDonald's and Nirula's and assorted university book stores. Get to a T-junction which has the back gate of Kirori Mal college, and then well just ask anyone. The shop is tucked away in a little back-lane right there.

Vaishnav Chaat Bhandar in Kamla Nagar

A short 5 minute walk away from Chacha Di Hatti is the Vaishnav Chat Bhandar. The address is 66-E Kamla Nagar, but again, asking around for directions is the best idea. Try the alu chaat, golgappas, kulfi, tikki and everyone I know has different favorites.

Bittoo Tikki Wala in Kamla Nagar

Again a short 3-minute walk from Vaishnav Chat Bhandar, you will be able to see a roundabout. In front of that roundabout, you will be able to located the famous Bittoo Tikki Wala. You can try anything out there, kulfi, tikki, golgappas, and potato chat. Everything is delicious and tasty.
