Famous Amritsar Restaurants - Places to Eat Out in Amritsar - Best Food in Amritsar

The Golden Temple of Amritsar is visited by thousands of foreigners on a daily basis and it is one of the major tourist destinations in India, so I am writing this hub to share my personal experience for travelers to Amritsar. This hub will serve as a food guide for Amritsar visitors. I have also included pics and maps of famous places in Amritsar.

Almost around one year ago, me with my family visited Amritsar. We spent around four days in Amritsar and visited Golden temple, Jallianwala Bagh, Wagah Border, and a relative’s house. We stayed in Hotel CJ International which is right near the langar hall building of Golden temple Gurudwara. This was my third visit to Amritsar in whole life and I wanted to try the best food in Amritsar. I had heard about Amritsari naan, Amritsari chole, Amritsari kulcha, Amritsari fish, tandoori chicken and I wanted to try everything. One of my friends, Jitender, who is basically from Amritsar gave me the details of best restaurants and food joints in Amritsar, so I am going to share with you people my review of Amritsari food. This review will help you people in getting to know about what to eat and where to eat in Amritsar during your visit to the GoldenTemple.

Surjeet Food Plaza and Restaurant in Amritsar

Surjeet food plaza is located in a capacious basement on Lawrence Road, Amritsar, Punjab. Surjeet's shop has been famous all over India for serving absolutely delicious tandoori chicken and chicken kebabs. Other popular non-vegetarian items of this dhaba include yellow daal (an excellent dish), cheese dishes, and the tandoori fish (large boneless chunks, done very well). The cheese was wonderfully soft. Though the shop is most renowned for its tandoori chicken, I found the matar paneer recipe (peas cheese recipe) the most outstanding dish of the lot. The memory of its gravy is making my mouth water even as I write this hub.

Durga Ice Cream in Amritsar

Durga ice cream is located on the same street, but on the opposite side of Surjeet Restaurant. Durga makes its own ice creams. I was recommended the fruit cream, which I found okay. Their ice creams are good, but not better than several options in Delhi.

KulchaLand in Amritsar

Kulcha land is located on Ranjit Avenue in the District Shopping Complex, right opposite to the huge MK Hotel. KulchaLand serves up lip smacking Amritsari kulchas from morning till evening 4 p.m. They serve these kulchas at Rs. 25 for a plate of stuffed kulcha dripping with butter, along with sour chole and some delectable onion salad. They're willing to pack it for you to take to Delhi if you need them.

Kesar da Dhaba in Amritsar

Kesar da Dhaba of Amritsar is very popular among North Indians. Everyoneseems to know about Kesar ka Dhaba. This restaurant is located in a small back lane close to the telephone exchange (not far from the Amritsar railway station). But if you are going to visit this place, you need to go with a massive North Indian or what I should Punjabi appetite because the complete vegetarian food served in this dhaba is positively afloat in desi ghee (clarified butter of the Indian subcontinent). Word of advice: Don't take the tandoori paranthas. You need the plain tandoori rotis to counterbalance some of the oiliness of other dishes. The food is probably the kind the punjabis eat in rural Punjabi homes. It is meant for people who work in the fields all day long, not for us who sit on computers for the whole day. Again it is authentic, but not recommended unless you are going to be spending the whole day doing hard labor in the fields of Punjab.

For people living sedentary lives sitting on the computer or on their office chair, it might be worth instead checking out Bhrawaan da Dhaba in Punjabi or Brothers Restaurant in English. This dhaba is prominently located close to the GoldenTemple. I had gone to this place once and I know that the taste of food there is similar to Kesar Da Dhaba, but it is much lighter. Just wanted to make a short note to record that between the two brothers' dhabas close to the golden temple in Amritsar, i.e. "(Bade Bhai ka) Brothers' Dhaba" and "Bharavaan da Dhaba", you should probably pick the latter.
