Will lifting heavy slow me down?
64Sprinting is heavily reliant on explosive training
Do you know sprinting is very heavily reliant on the nervous system's ability to activate explosive strength, that is, ignite all muscle fibers instantaneously in a repeated effort fashion. In studies, Olympic clean and jerk lifters have always beaten traditional sprinters in a 50 meter sprint race. What does that tell you? Sprinting is heavily reliant on explosive training. Simply "doing lunges" does NOT train the CNS to this same capacity. Even if you did lunges explosively, it still wouldn't compare with clean and jerks, depth jumps, ME training, and so on. Lunges are usually done in a slow and controlled manner, so the CNS learns to move slow, not fast.
Ever heard the idea that "Lifting heavy slows you down"? This is why. When I do a bench press, the last half of the bench is spent decelerating to protect my joints from lockout. This teaches my CNS to move slower, not faster. A martial artist who depends on heavy weight training without ME or CAT training to compensate will be slower and weaker in a fight, not faster and stronger.
