Facts on PCOS (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome). Tips on dealing with it

By soni2006

What is PCOS?

In very simple terms, PCOS or Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome is a genetic problem with various hormonal manifestations. It presents with a rainbow of symptoms like difficulty in losing weight, tendency to gain weight around the waist (belly), regular or sometimes grossly delayed periods, excess facial hair, acne, difficulty in conceiving, recurrent miscarriages, etc. It is not necessary that one must have all these symptoms or problems together. While some patients may have recurrent miscarriages, others may have had children easily but battle delayed periods and weight gain.

PCOS is the most common cause of menstrual irregularities in woman in the age group of 15 to 45 years. In the women suffering either from infertility, recurrent miscarriage, or weight gain, PCOS is responsible for 50% of the problems. This is not something that has suddenly evolved now. It has been there for years but definitely the incidence has increased maybe because of our food habits, lifestyle changes, or rising environmental pollution. Our ability to diagnose this problem has also improved with the coming of transvaginal ultrasound. Ultrasound done with a full bladder may miss the diagnosis in most cases of PCOS.

The ultrasound feature of PCOS will remain from 'womb to tomb', from the time you are born till the time you die. Yes it may not show all its features in the initial stages. That is why some patients may have had children (and had regular periods until then) but with the increase in weight, suddenly will start having delayed periods thereafter.

PCO and Diabetes

Doctors say that woman who have PCOS have a high risk of getting diabetes and they suggest a medicine to be taken daily. It is true that women with PCOS are more susceptible to diabetes because women with PCOS have an increased risk of being glucose intolerant. They can develop diabetes early in life and develop diabetes when pregnant which is known gestational diabetes in medical terminology and have a 50% chance of developing diabetes after the age of 40. Preventive measures like weight loss and diet modification should thus be started at an early age.

Treatment of PCO with allopathy or modern medicine

Allopathy treats the condition on lines of hormonal imbalance and the major treatment includes HRT (hormone replacement therapy) where subsequent hormones are administered after proper evaluation of the patient. Apart from that, diet and certain exercises are also recommended. Apart from that, there is a growing belief that PCOS occurs due to malfunction of the hormone insulin and hence diabetic drugs like metformin may also be prescribed by your doctor for the same. Surgery is also an option exercised where the ovary is punctured or the cystic tissue above the ovary is destroyed for better hormonal gain. However, all these have their own aftereffects and you must evaluate all options about it by talking with your gynecologist and personally researching on the net. This rule not only applies to allopathy but also to other streams of medicine as after all it is your body.

So which one would you prefer for treating PCOS?

  • Natural medicine like Ayurveda without side effects
  • Allopathic medicine like hormonal replacement therapies with long-term side effects

Natural treatment of polycystic ovarian syndrome such as Ayurveda

In taking hormones, it further depletes your endocrinal system and puts them in sleep. The stuff that has to be naturally released by the body, once delivered with artificial means puts the body in a lazy mode. The HRT treatment may give you good results but is not recommended in long run as it can cause other problems.

Now taking in account the above-mentioned treatment modalities, we can place a pattern for proper evaluation and treatment modalities for PCOS.

1. Eat at regular intervals. For example, if you have breakfast, lunch, and dinner between 8 to 9, 12 to 2 and 8 to 9 respectively, see to it that you follow these timings as the thyroid gland become trained to secrete juices in these times. Any variations and it puts pressure on the glands. Doesn't matter even if you gulp down a glass of milk, but the timings must be maintained.

2. Salt restriction is another major aspect. Prepare food without salt. Take as much as you want in the plate (only one helping) then add salt to taste. Prefer saindhav salt (Himalayan crystal salt).

3. Have a papaya for breakfast/dinner at least 2-3 times a week until your cycles regularize. Apart from that also intake porridge prepared from Ragi extract (nachini, Eleusine coracana). prefer crystal sugar (Khadisakhar, Mishri) for taste instead of normal sugar. Weight watchers can prefer sugar substitutes however crystal sugar is very safe.

4. Avoid sleeping after lunch. Have a glass of buttermilk (prepared without salt).

5. Stay away from direct/indirect use of the following items; Brinjals, Peas, Peanuts, cauliflower, seafood, pickles, curds (buttermilk is okay), green chilies, mustard, bakery products (pastries okay).

Finally I am listing some simple herbal decoctions, which if taken over a period of 2 to 3 months will definitely help:

1. Buy Ashwagandha roots (Withania somnifera; entire about 150 grams), Arjun bark (Terminalia arjuna; about 70 grams) from a local herb shop. Divide both of these into 30 equal parts. Now boil 1 part every morning in 3 cups of water (approximately 150 ml) and reduce to 1 cup. Now filter this mixture and add 1 cup of cow's milk to it. Boil the mixture again over a low flame until milk remains. Add 2 cardamoms while boiling. Consume this milk early morning empty stomach. Little sugar can be added for taste. The remaining filtrate of Ashwagandha and Arjun can be used similarly in evening. During summer months, Shatavari (Asparagus racemosus var. javanica) can be substituted for Ashwagandha.

2. After 30 days or 35 days if the periods do not commence have the following mixture for 3 days, 10 grams Nagkeshar (Mesua ferra flower stamens), 10 gms crystal sugar (Khadisakhar, Mishri) and 10 gms Cow's ghee (clarified butter from cow), it must be mixed and consumed with milk once a day. The above combination is for one day. If the periods do not commence even after this medicine, then do not worry. Keep taking the above medicine. Eventually they will come and with proper ovulation.

The above simple remedy coupled with diet will definitely help and let you lead a normal menstrual life with kids and no infertility. In case you feel you need to evaluate this option more, try and consult a good Ayurveda physician. Having customized and specialized treatments will help you gain more. For example:

1. Generic preparations like Ashwagandharishta, Ashokarishta, Kumaryasava, Chandraprabha Vati, Pushyanug churna, Phal Ghrita, Raupya Bhasma, Vang Bhasma, Abrakh Bhasma, etc. may be advised by your Ayurveda doctor (You can check how these medicines are prepared along with contents at http://nlam.in [NATIONAL LIBRARY OF AYURVEDA MEDICINE]).

2. Panchakarma techniques like Basti, Uttar Basti, Vaman, Virechana, Nasya are also undertaken.

3. Certain yogic exercises like Simhasan, Vajrasan, Shalabhasan, Sarvangasan are also helpful and may be coupled with the above medicines.

Ayurveda says to do this before trying conception

Besides the above remedies, the simple Ayurveda method to check if the periods are adulatory and with proper hormonal functions is to take a few drops of menstrual blood on a clean white cloth and wait for few seconds. Now wash the cloth with plain warm water (no soap, detergents) and observe if it leaves a pickle like stain. Clean periods as per Ayurveda must not leave stain on the cloth. Once you achieve that, you can then try conception.

Thank you very much Tatjana for the comment and thumbs up. Yes the test I have mentioned in the last chapter is the initial thing which ayurvedic doctors ask whenver a patient with PCOS comes to them. It helps them to diagnose and start treatment too.

Hi Payal. Please don't wait and visit a good gynecologist in your area. As you mentioned that you are not having periods for around 5 to 6 months, that's an issue. Please do not get depressed, as this problem is happening with around 80% of women in the world. First step for you is to visit your doctor and do not feel ashamed, go ahead and meet a female doctor if you want. Yes a lot of hair on your face suggests PCOS but sometimes it can also be a thyroid hormone problem so I cannot prescribe you any treatment regarding this over here but your doctor can. Do not worry your gyne will provide some medicines like Diane or Yasmin for a 3 month course or so. These are basically contraceptive pills but after doing this course when your PCOS will come under control, you can visit a good ayurvedic physician and he or she can prescribe natural medicine to you which will help in the long term as PCOS is a longterm problem.

Some useful steps to help control PCO symptoms:

1. If you are gaining weight, start to lose weight, the best remedy for PCOS.

2. Modify your lifestyle. Do not sit idle at home just be active and do some work, join some aerobic class, swimming, yoga, anything anything active.

3. Avoid oily foods with lots of ghee or butter on it.

4. As your name suggests you are an Indian and might be you are into eating golgappas, Try to get rid of them whenever your dates are near.

5. Cut down on full cream milk and use toned mother dairy milk if possible.

I am telling if you will try all these steps under proper guidance and medicine, you will definitely not only control your PCOS symptoms and problem but you will conquer and overcome it.

PS: Always remember, do not ever never take any medication without a doctor's prescription because it can very very fatal. Always consult a doctor before taking them.

A couple from Bareily, Uttar Pradesh had been referred to Dr. Sheila Mehra, a leading gynaecologist at Moolchand who specializes in high risk pregnancies. Hi Paypal

It does sound like u have PCOS. The fact that u have hirutism(excess hair, eg facial, chest..etc) Also the weight gain. You may even notice your head hair has become lesser or finer.. (another symptom)

things like PCOS and strongly related to Diabetes, and are controlled by the same gene.

Best thing to do, is not to be on any contraception pills, eg Estelle, Diane35 or Yasmine, as for some people this increases the weight.

Its true, that you do need to lose weight, which is alot harder when you have PCOS. I few good Ayurvedic products are: Kanchanaar Guggul, Triphala and even Chanderprabha vati.

There is a Ayurvedic medicine called Hyponidd, and I have heard good reviews on posts about it.. but Im not too sure about it. I will be trying it very soon.

Hope this helps :)

Best of luck

Hi...you've written a nice article. I have been diagnosed with pcos recently and we started trying since last couple of months. I would like to know if between eating chapathis and rice which one should I control. We generally eat chapathis or rice and dal and some veggie or chicken curry. I want to really control my diet to help myself besides remaining active outdoors. Thank you.

Priya 2 years ago

Also, you mentioned above that one should not eat golgappa ? Which item of golgappa is not safe if I am trying to conceive or conceived. Thanks.

soni2006 profile image

soni2006 Hub Author 2 years ago

The diet for a woman having PCOS should be plain and simple but at the same time nutritious. Chappatis, rice, pulses, and chicken curry is fine but one should avoid red meat because it has more fat leading to weight gain which is a common problem for PCOS patients. One should also reduce the amount of ghee and oil while preparing food. As for golgappas, it is my own personal feeling as we have been taught by our late grandmother that woman eating golgappas have a tendency to delay their menses. I do not have any scientific evidence for this but then also I have observed that following advice of old people in our family is beneficial.

For patients with PCO who are trying to conceive, the first thing is to regularize their menses and the second important thing is to reduce weight and if not possible at least maintain their weight and should be active.

Thanks for such an informative article. I have been diagnosed with PCOS, but I am underweight(51 kilos, 5ft 5 inches). I had two consecutive miscarriages over the period of one year, both were lost before 10 weeks. I have a 37 day cycle. I do not have any obvious symptoms of PCOS (recent hairloss, but this could also be because I am moved to a new country recently) and my ultrasounds show a dominant follicle.

Are there any ayurvedic remedies to prevent another miscarriage with my future pregnancies? Should I exercise regularly and maintain a fat free diet inspite of being underweight?

MY doctor has precribed metformin for the next 3 months, and suggested trying to conceive again. I am also taking folic acid and a supplement called QGold containing Coenzyme Q10 with Lycopene.

But honestly, I'd prefer taking ayurvedic medication without side effects.

I will appreciate your expert opinion on my case. Thanks a lot!

First of all, Sonali I am very sorry that I saw your question today. Secondly, I would like to let you know that I am not an expert in this field and I am not a doctor also but I have researched on PCOS and after that I came to some conclusion and that's why I have shared that information over here.

According to me in your situation, it would be really nice if you follow up with a very good women disease specialist or a prominent gynecologist in your area. It is a new case for me as I have never heard or met people who are underweight having PCOS. I doubt that there might be something else going on with PCOS or might be possible that it is not PCO.

Regarding the miscarriages, I would say that it is a common thing in women having PCO. The best thing is to first get it diagnosed what it is really and then follow proper treatment.

May God bless you and all will be well for you. Take care.

My docs suggests me to have on contraceptive which i tried for 4-5 months, then on metmorphin and clomid. I took this course 3-5 times. But all in vain. I also tried ayurvedic treatment but nothing goes right at this point in time. Right now I only wants to regularise my periods. I would be greatful to you, if you suggests something for my case.

Hi I am 20 year old South African and was diagnosed with Mythenia Gravis at the age of 11 and first started puberty at the age of 13. I have always had every heavy periods and extreme fatigue. 4 years ago I was put on the pill but continued to be extremely fatigued so my Doctor put me on a Adreprovera, to stop my periods so I could function in my every day life. I have recently stop the injections because my periods would not stop for 3 months and I became anemic. I have just been diagnosed with PCOS, and am very worried about HRT for the long term side effects such as: breast cancer, ovarian cancer etc. considering my Gran was just diagnosed with ovarian cancer.

I am on a lot of medication, ciclosporin, mestinon. I am worried that alternative medicines will effect my illness, due to the fact that I cant have magnesium, anti-oxidants, gluten, lactose and any natural plant such as arnica that enhances the immune system which worsens the symptoms of Mysthenia Gravis. I really hope that you can help me with an alternative way in treating my PCOS.

I admit that I do not have any expertise or knowledge on providing you any "alternative treatment source for myasthenia gravis" but when I googled today for the same, "alternative treatment for myasthenia gravis", I found around Results 1 - 10 of about 62,500 for alternative treatment for myasthenia gravis. (0.32 seconds) which can be helpful for you in determining an alternative treatment for your myasthenia gravis.

I would like to tell you that alternative or natural medicine takes time but it heals up from the root. I have now started researching for the same everywhere with my colleagues who have some knowledge about the same. In the meantime, you can research on your own by googling, "alternative treatment for myasthenia gravis".

Now i'am married for 4yrs and no child. So my doc in bangalore has suggested me to go for IVF.The doctor also has told me that it is very dangerous in future for any doctor to operate me.

My dilemma is to know who is the most experienced doctor who can operate either remove my uterus or operate on me in future any problems reoccur and also treat endometreosis and even can take care of the other kidney's.

So pls guide me through it..i'am ok with delhi also since my brother lives there.

Hi Vidya,

After going through you query, I am feeling really sorry for your state and the immense pain you are dealing with. First of all, please mention your age and let me know if you have had any surgery in the past. As fas as treating endometriosis, I think its a long way to go. If I were in your shoes, I would have opted for surgery with removal of uterus that means total abdominal hysterectomy but the most important thing in your case is that you cannot go for hysterecomy surgery or removal of uterus because after that you will not be able to give birth. Right now you are dealing with lack of fertilization and the problem that you are unable to conceive up until now as mentioned by you that you have been married for 4 years, so you have to go for IVF or intravenous fertilization and also treatment for endometriosis and PCOS at the same time.

If you are okay in Delhi as your brother lives here in Delhi, I would suggest you to contact Dr. Sheila Mehra who is a Senior Consultant Gynaecologist and Obstetrician in Moolchand Women's Hospital in Gynaecology and Obstetrics department. Hi i have just discovered this page and found it very interesting indeed.

I am 31 years old and was diagnosed with PCOS in 2002.I have suffered 2 miscarriages 1 at 13 and a half weeks and one at 18 weeks.I have just discovered i am pregnant again and i am only 5 weeks at the moment.I am terrified it will happen again.I was just wondering if you knew of anything i could be doing to help prevent me from micarrying again.I understand there is nothing that will completely prevent a miscarriage but i would like to try to give myself and my baby a better chance.

Thank you so much.

I am so sorry for your 2 miscarriages and the PCOS condition you are suffering from over the last seven years. Please do not take any risk and go through this really useful forum in this case: http://www.soulcysters.net/prevent-miscarriage-232

Just go ahead and register and find answers to your PCOS related questions personally because that would be the best way to get more info about it. Also, you can go through this article on "how to prevent miscarriage with pcos?" here: http://www.fertilethoughts.com/forums/pcos-diabete

I will definitely write a detailed hub on this issue as it is very concerning to many women around the world but it will take some time for me to do all the research and gather valid information relating to the same. By the time, you can visit the two links listed above and find some solution to your problem and when you do that, please comment over here what you learned from that as it will help other women having the same problem as you have. Sorry to not do enough for you this time. Don't worry be happy.

Hi,

I came across your blog, I would need a small help from you. I am suffering from PCOS,I tried researching a lot to find a book that is written by an Indian Doctor on PCOS which talks about what diet to take and having indian names to the diet plan.

Hi i have pcos . I have regular periods of every month. I have normal weight. I have lot of hair on my face and also many times my skin becomes darkening. Is there any relation with pcos to make skin becomes dark. If yes means any solution for maintaining normal skin.

soni2006 profile image

I think there is no relation of PCOS to skin darkening as I have not heard about this up until know but talk to your gyne as she would be the best judge for that. If you want to maintain normal skin, I would recommend using natural herbal product without side effects like

No Swathi honey is natural and not processed like sugar so it will definitely not increase your weight but excess of everything is bad I can say everything as I have experienced so never go out of limits a teaspoon a day is enough. Im 35 yrs old, with pco, 230lbs, 5'8, and i have high blood pressure. Due to excessive bleeding i had dnc six times. Now, my OBGY wants to do it again. is there any other options i can take? is metformin for life? what are the side effects of provera? can i shift to natural medicine?

soni2006 profile image

soni2006 Hub Author 2 years ago

See Jackie, Phils, you have already undergone dilatation and curettage for six times, so I do not think that switching all over to natural medicine at this time will be highly beneficial. My wife took metformin for just three months and then she stopped. She was also suffering severe symptoms of PCOS but right now her PCO is in remission. I know it can flare up at any time and we need to start the course again. The best alternative to get rid of Metformin and Provera from your life is to start exercising, living a healthy and active lifestyle, following the advise and medicines of your gynecologist, reducing use of high fat containing foods from your diet. While following all these steps, you can visit a good naturopathic or natural medicine doctor in your area and start treatment. Naturopathic and allopathic treatment can go side by side but you have to see which natural medicine route you are going to take. Also, consult with both your doctors. Remember allopathic medicine is to control your problems and symptoms instantly for the time being but natural medicine is to wipe off your PCO right from its roots. It's a long and difficult route but if there is no pain, there is no gain.

Dear Soni, Im 28 & diagnosed with PCOD. Been married for 3 months now. I ddid have irregular menses before and i can relate to the pcod symptoms. However, im not sure if it is something i had before marriage or after. My doctor has put me on G-Reg Sr 1000, Clomid, Krimson & folacin for a period. However, I heard that Ayurvedic medicine like ASHOKARISHTA, is extremely helpful with this condtion. Is it advisable to take ayurvedic medicine while im on allopatic treatment? Also, Im advised to lose weight 20 kilos minimum (currently 90 Kilos). I have recently started practicing Yoga. Your review would be appreciated

soni2006 profile image

soni2006 Hub Author 2 years ago

Hi Sweraj, practicing Yoga and decreasing weight with the help of regular exercise and walking is highly advised in cases with PCOD. You have heard it right that Ayurvedic medicines like Ashokarishta and others are really helpful in the treatment of PCOD side by side with ongoing allopathic medicines. You are on the right track but need to work a lot to maintain a healthy and active lifestyle and that is the most important course of natural treatment for PCO. In my upcoming hubs, I am and will be publishing more on ayurvedic medicines, herbal remedies, and benefits of living an active lifestyle. Watch out for those and reap the benefits. May God cure your problem and you get your menses regularized.

Hi

I was going through your site.It is very useful.

I am 28 year old, and diagnised with PCOD.

I have irregular periods since 4-5 years. I have put on weight on my stomach part.

I got married 16 months back and am trying to get conceived.

I am diagnised with PCOD in December 2009 and started treatment.

I started getting periods after taking Deviry 10mg for 7 days.

Then, I was in below medication for 2 cycles. But I did nt get conceived.

1)Metformin 500mg morning and night.

2)Fertyl 100mg. third day after periods for 5 days.

3)GMH 150 IU injection on 8th day of period.

4)Injection HCG 5000IU on 13th day of period.

5)During this time I was under ultra sound scaning study on every alternate days.

After above treatment, my doctor suggested me to take below tablets. I have done this for last one cycle. But I haven't got conceived.

1)Metformin 500mg morning and night daily.

2)Letroz 5mg on 3rd day after my period for 5 days.

3)Susten 200 on 15th day of period for 15days.

I am also taking M-2tone 3ml daily.

Now, My doctor has suggested for IVF in next cycle. But, we are not interested in the IVF.

Please suggest, your openions on getting conceived without IVF.

thanks

Sana, to get conceived, the first and most important step is to regularize your periods and maintain your weight and for that, you have to go through each and every part of article where you will find numerous ways to do this. One more thing which I have not mentioned over nor any other person has ever mentioned online is that avoiding eating sour women favorite snacks like golgappas, ticki, bhalle papri, lemon dishes, etc. just 10 days before your period days help you regularize your periods. This is the thing which is not known to many and even the doctors do not agree with this as they say that there is no scientific reason for this but then also my wife including many of her friends have been able to control and regularize their previously irregular periods.

Try this this month Sana and let me know about what is the benefit you have got from avoiding sour items just 10 days prior to your period dates. Sharing your experience over here will help many other sisters of you all over the world who are suffering from this PCO problem.

It is possible to be born with PCOS?

soni2006 profile image

soni2006 Hub Author 2 years ago

Zhanna, I am not sure about that that a girl is born with PCOS. How come it is possible? I think you have not read this article, read these lines first, "PCOS is the most common cause of menstrual irregularities in woman in the age group of 15 to 45 years" so this problem starts after girls reach puberty and start menstruating. I hope that helps.

Now once again its been one month that my periods are absent.I donot want to use medicine because of the fear of weight gain.. please suggest me what should i do...!

Thanks

soni2006 Hub Author 2 years ago

Dear Alish, you can choose the natural route of treating PCOS. Yes it is true that up until the time you are under the effect of medicines you mentioned above, your periods will be okay but once you will leave those after two to three months, the periods will again get irregular. Why not buy evercare of Himalaya HealthCare. I have mentioned that above in this article right above the comment section. Take 10 ml of evecare liquid thrice a day for at least three months and you will definitely see the positive results. If syrup is not available, you can use evecare capsules according to the directions listed on the pack or you can also consult an ayurvedic doctor in your area.

Alish 2 years ago

soni2006 profile image

soni2006 Hub Author 2 years ago

Yes Alish, I have heard a lot about parsley tea for inducing menstruation in cases of pcos, stress, and uterine fibroids. You can try that too. But it is beneficial for only inducing periods and not treating PCOS so for permanent treatment of pcos, you can buy evecare online from my article above it is not available in a local pharmacy in your area.

Hi Soni,

7 months back i had a problem of no periods for 2 months. When i consulted a doctor the ovary sonogram and thyroids have come out normal. BUt i was put on Krimson 35 for 6 months. BUt after 6 months when i stopped using the pills the problem recommenced. I have worked to reduced my weight as suggested by my Gyn.

However i am very skeptic about taking any kind of allopathic hormonal treatment or suppliment. I was wondering if i could use Ashokarishta instead of going to my gyn again. Also what should be the dosage if i were to use Ashokarishta.

Any suggestions would be a great help as this problem is causing a lot of anxiety.

Hi friend, leave Ashokarishta for now and try already prepared and easy to use Ayurvedic Medicine Evecare Menstricare to regularize your delayed periods. You can buy this medicine online just go to the top of this page and you can buy it from Amazon store directly. Take the capsules for at least three months and you will feel the difference. Here in India, Evecare is available in syrup form also for fast relief of periods but I am doubtful that it is available in syrup form at Amazon or Ebay store so go ahead with the one I have mentioned right in the beginning of this article. Best of luck. I am anticipating to hear some good news from your after 2 to 3 months of taking this Ayurvedic medicine manufacture by Himalaya HealthCare, a major Ayurvedic medicine manufacturer in India.

Hi

I was going through your site.It is very useful. I am 24 year old, and diagnosed with PCOD.

I have irregular periods since my puberty. I have put on weight on my stomach part very badly.

I got married 17 months back and am trying to get conceived.

I am diagnised with PCOD in January 2010 and started treatment.

I started getting periods after taking Diamet 850mg. Then, I had brown spotting, so my Doctor suggested Diane 35 for 3 months after that course then I was in below medication for 1 cycle. But I did not get conceived.

1)Diamet 850mg: night.

2)Siphene 50mg: 5 days(from 2nd day of period)

3)Duphaston:10 days(from 14th day of period) but I did a mistake of taking this tablet from 2nd day

4)Essvit F: All mornings

During this time I was suppose to have period but I have missed it for 9 days now. Home pregnancy test showed negative, Kindly suggest me if something has gone wrong??

Thanks Soni for your reply... As said I contacted gynecologist she has asked me to wait untill I get my periods or either Pregnancy.

Hi JJ, right now you just need to keep some patience and follow the advice of your gynecologist. As you have already mentioned that PCOD has been in your family history with your mom having this problem, so this will take some time but not so many years as your mom had because now we have more advanced treatment modalities than what our mothers had at their times. Keep up the spirit. Cheer up and wait for a healthy baby. I wish you good luck.

@Hi, to regularize your periods, buy Evecare Menstricare from above widget and use it for three months to get rid of this problem permanently. It's a proven natural ayurvedic remedy from Himalaya HealthCare. No side effects. Only you will feel a little hot when taken in summers. That's it.

@Nam, if you can try the nagkeshar method I have mentioned above, then it is really good but sometimes people find it really hard to collect all the medicines and prepare the remedy and also quantity or quality matters a lot. You can also buy Menstricare Evecare mentioned on the top of this article and cure your periods and cure your PCOS. Menstricare Evecare is a RAAMBAAN (Lord Rama's Arrow) for the treatment of women reproductive disorders.

Hi Soni,

I am also suffering of PCOS + hirstuism, aged 26, height 5"5', current weight=70kg, and my periods were regular. But just some months before marriage they started getting late and 2 months after marriage I skipped my periods for the first time. I consulted a doc in Preet Vihar, Delhi and she advised me to take Glyciphage ( 3 times daily ), Asmita( 1 at night), Finast ( 1 daily) and Aldactone (1 daily). I continued this treatment for arnd 12-13 months and then due to pressure from family members against taking so many pills I discontinued it in end of March,2010. After that I have had 2 periods,April one occured on time, May got delayed by 5 days, n june failed to happen. However, I just noted here in ur thread that my golgappa intake had increased incredibly during the last 2 months. I will control that. Also, I have moved to Bangalore, so I need to consult a doc there. I was wondering about a Ayurvedic doc in Bangalore for some personal consultation. Hi Soni

I got married in October 2008 and did not conceive till date. In January I got diagnosed with PCOD and went to gynaecologist who put me on metformin, letrozole, productive F and started doing my follicular study with regural hormonal injections like HMG, FSH and HCG.My egg ruptured easily after every HCG shots but I could not conceive. I underwent two follicular studies but the result was not positive and stopped the treatment. I am 24 years of age, 5.3" in height and my weight is 69kgs. After the treatment my periods have regularize ( my last date of periods was 27 but this month they came on 22 i.e a bit early). What do you suggest, the treatment that I was taking is right or can I now conceive without the treatment or is there any other way out. Regarding Diane-35, most women experience some side effects like nausea, dizziness, and headaches with this medication. You can try to ask your doctor if she can give you Yasmin instead of Diane-35, as it is much more smoother than Diane and will not cause you any trouble.

Regarding your hormonal problems, if you are in Delhi you can consult Dr. Anju Virmani who is a Consultant Endocrinologist at Sunder Lal Jain Hospital, New Delhi. Her residence and clinic is at C 6/6477,Vasant Kunj, Delhi, 110070. She also sits at Max HealthCare in Saket.

You can get an appointment at: +91-11-26135302

Best of luck.

@Deepika and Swati, in PCOS, you need to eat balanced and nutritious diet, do regular exercise, make lifestyle modifications, stop eating golgappas at the time of your cycles, start taking Himalaya Evecare for at least three months until your periods become regular.

Don't worry too much about the condition as worrying makes it worse. Relax and live a calm and stress free life as PCOS is related to hormonal imbalance and this imbalance can be controlled with relaxation and meditation. Yoga is best route to go.

Hello,

I am 24 yrs old, unmarried and I have been diagonised with PCOS. I have been having regular periods, no weight gain. My symptoms were excessive acne and excessive hair loss.My dermatologist asked to get a Ultra sound done which confirmed PCO. She has now asked me to visit a endocrinologist. I am getting contrasting advises regarding visiting a endcrinologist or gynaecologist. Please advise asap as I need to visit during the weekend.

@Priya, you need to visit an endocrinologist or a hormone specialist. If you are in Delhi, you can visit Dr. Anju Virmani who resides at Vasant Kunj and sits at Max Hospital in Saket Delhi, in Sunder Lal Jain Hospital in Ashok Vihar, and in some hospital in Gujranwala. Best of luck.

@Neera, if you are in Delhi, you need to visit the same doctor I listed above. You have PCO and thyroid too that's need to be treated by an endocrinologist. She will also help you in conceiving a baby but you need to follow the advice of that doctor definitely.

Dr. Virmani is a consultant endocrinologist and sits at C6/6477,Vasant Kunj, Delhi, 110070

@Radhika, acne and pimple can occur due to PCOS. You need to get an ultrasound done of your ovaries.

Hi Nishi, first of all I am not a doctor. I am simple writer and human being just like you. I had some info and knowledge about PCOS and I am sharing here with all of you.

Regarding your case, if you are having irregular periods, you need to get an ultrasound done by your gynecologist so that she can confirm if you have PCO. The constant returning of pimples is an indication of this disease. Get it evaluated first.

Hi! Mam.

My wife is 28 yrs and 52kg with 5.3 feet height, she never had her periods without medicines, what ever doctors have suggested she and now we are following.

She has no other symptoms other than periods for PCOS, now its 1 yr we are married and we are trying to conceive from last 8 months. So she is not taking birth control pills(earlier taking from age of 17 for normal periods as suggested by doctors), so its neither period nor pregnant, now she is on metformin, folic acid and throxin.

Please suggest the way out, we want to be happy parents now....

Thanks

Hi soni, I am also suffering from polycystic ovarian syndrome. I am a 27 year old women, height 5 feet 2 inches, current weight is 62 kg, and my periods were regular, but after my marriage, my periods started getting delayed and two months, I have put on some weight also. I consulted a gynecologist

in Pune and she advised me to take Diana 35. I continued this treatment since last 7 months and then I have gain weight plus increase measurement of my body, means my breast size also increased. I m also facing the problem of excessive hair loss…

I want to discontinued this therapy. I don’t want to use the Diana 35 medicine for my rest of life.

Histroy of mine is like….in 2005 my weight was 68…that time also my periods were irregular.. so doctor suggested me to lose weight…so I have lost 10kg.

So that period of time my mense was regular…but after marriage I have put on some weight due to it again I facing the problem..

After googling on PCOS I came to know that weight loss is very good remedy for period’s regularization…. But currently my problem is like…. I have joined since 4 months nd doing daily 2 hrs workout in gym nd also maintaining diet …but in spite of this I m not able to lose my weight.

So shall I discontinue with Diana35….and If I discontinue it..then what alternative should I use?

Pls reply me asap

Hi,

I'm 25 years old, 5'2", 52 kg. I had an ultrasound a couple of months back and I was told I had PCOS. At the time, they said it wasn't very severe. However, I recently had another one and they said it is now severe. I haven't started Glucophage because one doctor told me to start Clomid directly because she said I get my periods on time, and my weight is in check, and there is no need for it. I have taken Clomid for one month, but it didn't work.

Another thing I must mention is that I have dysmennorhea. I get my periods on time, but when I do, it is so severe that I sometimes have to be taken to get an injection for the pain. What do u suggest I do. Should I take Glucophage to cure the PCOS and then take Clomid to try to conceive or just continue Clomid? I'm so confused!

Even though PCOS is not curable, there are alternates to make things manageable. better. Talk to a specialist (I highly talking to several), talk to family/friends, search the internet, etc.

Hi Soniji,

I am Jaya (26yrs old). I read your responses for various cases of PCOD. Its very informative and would appreciate you for your efforts. I would also like to share few things which can help people like me to overcome PCOD.

I am a PCOD patient since 9 yrs. Right from starting my periods were irregular. That's why i put on weight and loose after every three months. Maximum it has gone upto 9 months not having periods.I tried allopathy and prescribed to Krimson. I used it for 6 months, changed to a better diet (as loose weight helps in recovering) and exercise at least 3 days a week. This helped me but unfortunately i got skin allergy - a dark line/spots like (left portion of my body from left ring finger to...hand....arm...underarm...chest line.... waist....thigh, till knee. i stopped the medicine then my PCOD reoccurred. So i tried homeopathy in the year 2009...first 45 days i got my periods, then slowly it picked up...40 days...35 days...then after 6 months i stopped. (Though the doctor asked me to maintain the course for one complete year - my mistake and i regret). Now 6 months back i am married and now its been 7 months i got my periods. i dont want to delay or stop pregnancy and hence decided not to use any contraceptive pills...but however being a PCOD patient i should get rid of that first to conceive. So i am undergoing a homeopathy course again and this time i am going to take it seriously. Already 3 months gone and i took a scan before and recently. there is a slight change in my cysts condition, which i am happy about. I hope my problem gets solved. But most importantly, would emphasize on few thing for people like me:

1) Any medicine - (allopathy/Homeo/Ayurvedic) take it regularly, believe the treatment. Be in positive mind set. Mind cures a lot of body problems.

2) Be active, if not able to go to gym atleast 20 mins walk, and 5 mins normal body work outs and most importantly skipping should be part of your morning schedule.

3) Have a simple life style - do not take any pressure or stress. If your work involves stress and pressure please shift to something which or happy doing and little less pressure job (the world has enough options -we should search thats all). Enjoy every moment and keep your heart mind and subsequently body happy. As PCOD women have risk of Diabetics.

4) Meditation - atleast weekends try meditation. Sit in a corner and meditate. Feel positive about your problem and believe its getting cured. your body listens to your mind and it will do its best to support the treatment. there is something called cosmic energy/power which will do wonders.

5) Proper nutritious diet. You should not be over weight..that does'nt mean we should starve and loose weight or rather become under weight. some people are plump by default (like me) who can never be skinny like models. But as long as you are up to the BMI thats fine. so have required amount of food (fruits/vegetables/pulses/grains/sprouts/dates etc). try one each day. You need to eat healthy to have energy to fight the problem mentally and physically. Build up a strong and immune body. It will give a good base for your child (if you are planning for a kid).

6)Do not discuss and feel bad about your PCOD problem. The more you discuss the more you will mentally be depressed. there is nothing cannot be cured in today's world. 50% depend on medicines and 50% on your own actions.

7)DO not take any contraceptive pills...better not to avoid pregnancy as in PCOD the chances of conceiving reduces. So plan in advance and have kids. Those pills might further spoil your hormones. So PCOD due to hormonal imbalance..... due to PCOD again hormonal imbalance and further imbalance due to these pills...imagine whats happening to your body. So be prepared to have little happy healthy babies....

Care your health and be positive. Again i am emphasizing ..."MIND CAN BODY"......

I am getting cured...n hope you also (whoever is PCOD patient).

Soniji Correct me if i am wrong.

Regards

Hello.

First I would like to say that I have also been diagnosed with pcos. Western medecine has a very different approach to it and I find the information on this site fascinating.

The first thing that my doctor told me is that insulin resistance makes it hard to loose any weight and so I was put on a limited carb diet. I have been watching my intake of rice and eating a lot of salads vegetables and fish and chicked I dont eat red meat.

I have beed doing a lot of walking and have even started running a little.

I was given birth control but do not want to use it because of all the negative side effects that come along with it.

So far so good.

Hi,

I've recently had second miscarriage at 13 weeks due to amniotic fluid leak. I have PCOD right from the time I started my periods. Had tried ayurvedic however did not work for me since then I have always been on low dose hormonal tabs or contraceptive pills to get periods every month. I'm 29 yrs and married for 2 yrs.My problem is not conception I have undergone follicular study and concieved on my own though we did not know the first time and it ended as early at 6 wks,for the second time we had planned well and taking all the necessary medications lk progesterone supplement and weekly hcg injections however due to sheer unfortunate circumstances I lost the pregnancy. I would like to know if it was related to my condition of pcod also before trying again if you could recommend a good doc specialist in such cases in Mumbai. I would like to mention that though I know pcod leads to weight gain I have maintained constant weight for past 4 yrs except that I started gaining during pregnancy. I have exercised regularly too ht is 5.8 and wt 66 to 68. Pls do let me know your opinion as I am a bit disturbed and trying to find out the root cause of this loss and want to prevent in future.

Hi, you recomended to take Menocare (Evecare) to cure PCOS

However there are no clinical trials to read on the website. There is no mention of side effects when taking MenoCare. MenoCare’s official website has a list of ingredients, but does not have any customer reviews.

Hello Sir,

Do you know any good doctor in Hyderabad.

I am fed up going to doctors without success.

I am 27 years old with PCOD & irregular periods, sometime with more then 3 months.

I had tried English medicines & Ayurveda medicines with not much success.

Now I am trying acupressure, however the irregular period problem is still there.

Do you know if Homeopathy would help ?

Thanks- Kiran

Hi All,

I was diagnosed with PCOS when I was 18, Now I am 24 and my cyst disappeared when I got my recent ultrasound done. I was put on medication took Krimson and Metformin for 6 months few years back but nothing worked. My main problem was weight gain and scanty periods.I consulted Art Of Living Ayurvedic Doctor and took the medicines. I am practising yoga from a long time, I do Suryanamaskar 10 cycles, Kapalbhatti, Anulom Vilom, few asanas. I exercise for 55 mins daily. I would suggest you all to exercise and do yoda and meditation. It can be CURED and in my case it got cured. Now I am not taking any medicines I just exercise and sleep early and get up early and meditate. If possible stop eating outside food, since I was student and stayed in hostel it was difficult for me to do that but I curbed it. Go for brisk walk for atleast 45 mins. Please practise yoga and if possible consult any Art of Living Ayurvedic doctor and continue taking those medicined for atleast 6 months. I am not endorsing anyone I am just telling you what I did.

Since taking hormonal pills never helped me nor metformin and I was only getting into depression I switched to Ayurveda. For 4 years I was frustated, as I used to be very lean before PCOS. I can really understand what you all are going through.

If they suggest you for Panchkarma go for it.Follow the doctor and you will see the results.

I wish evryone all the very best

Hi,

I had PCOS and also had hydro-sulphinx, which is a dilated Fallopian tubes. I had lots of alopathic treatment and doctors advised to go for operation...but thanks to my yoga teacher (bhaswati)...after the yoga class, I've found a miraculous recovery. bhaswati provided me with some of very basic health and pcos tips and a diet suggestion. a healthy diet, no more cuts on my favourite food, walking and asanas...this is all i've been doing for last 3 months on regular basis...u won't believe, my Fallopian tubes are fine now,PCOS issue is gone and periods are so smooth that hardly i notice that it's there !!!....such a relief...!!! If anyone of u are in b'lore with painful periods and pcos issues, u can try 'srimoyi yoga' by bhaswati...it's really amazing...
