Hi friends,
You people might have heard a lot of hoo-haa going on in the motoring press about Hyundai I‑20 these days.
Recently, I had the opportunity to drive one for an extended session.
LOOKS (EXTERIOR): I 20 has good paint work. "I have tried too hard to copy Peugeot 307" headlights, the belt line is nice, side profile, especially rear window reverse angle C - pillar harks back to Swift, wraparound tai lights - again very Swiftish touch.
INTERIORS: Good. Plastic quality pretty good, some bits shiny, huge glove box.
SPACE: Found the seats to be a bit on the flat side. Rear under thigh support could be better.
PERFORMANCE: Weird. Hyundai claims 80 odd bhp. Car I drove was new but even allowing for the new ones of the engine, the engine's reluctance to freely rev beyond 4500 rpm was disappointing. Until 3500 rpm, I 20 pulls decently, but beyond that you can sense a strain on the power plant. It is not that I-20 does not want to rev, but that it os better that you do not. Compare that to the Swift's turbine smooth "revvability" till the 6600 rpm limiter and you'll understand what I mean.
HANDLING: Lousy. Simply lousy. I 20 rolls and wallows in a corner. There is way to much understeer so much so that at modest speeds, say as low as 60 kph in a tightening bend. The nose starts washing out. Compare this to the Swift's razor sharp turn in, flat cornering, resistance to understeer and "throttle adjustability" the swift simply pummels the Hyundai into submission.

FUEL EFFICIENCY: I 20 : 9.8 hard driving, tankful to tankful in Delhi traffic Swift VXI with 185/70 - R14's: 11.82 same route, tankful to tankful, same traffic conditions.
SUMMARY: I 20: spacious hatch if you want to pootle around town.
SWIFT: The vehicle to own if you love driving, love cars and want to put a smile on your face when you are driving down that long and winding road, where ever it is.
It is good despite after three years of launch, Swift still rules and Hyundai despite doing a calculated effort not even coming closer to the performance of Swift.
Truly Swift is a revolution.
The funny thing is that if you drive the I 20 - drive it for an extended session, if possible, and you will also feel it - the engine does not behave as if it has got 80 odd bhp on tap - as claimed by Hyundai.
Initially it feels peppy, but when you extend it over the rev range, then the limitations come up.
If f you guys have driven the old Hyundai Accent and remember how the engine used to run into an "imaginary wall" after 4500 rpm versus the then free revving Esteem engine, you will have a very good comparison.
In terms of safety stakes, I-20 has the Swift licked what with 6 airbags, etc, but then again the price is also whopping enough.
Moot point is: FRILLS and niceties go for the Hyundai
For driving pleasure and depth of engineering, I would recommend MARUTI SWIFT.

Good review. But Hyundai i20 has been launched recently. Its too early to decide the success of this i20.
Yes i20 has been launched recently but then also, it will not be able to beat Swift, always remember it is India and we follow the rule of "watching others and buying something" and Swift has already been purchased by a lot of people in India. It is really tough for i20 to beat Maruti Swift in sales and service, but then also time will tell what will happen next.

Ritz is the best when compared with i20.ritz give Very good mileage(almost 13.5kmpl in heavy city traffic without AC, in highway with ac about 13kmpl). Raw power.Great looks. Perhaps this is the most stylish looking car made in India till date. Front seating is very comfortable & spacious. Getting into & out of the vehicle is very easy as it is taller than all the other sedans.
Whenever a new Maruti car is launched, we get reviews like this Udhaya Raj. Yes I know Ritz is great and worthy. Actually, when I published this hub comparing Swift and I-20, Ritz was rather new and people and also myself did not had any idea about it at that time. Yes Mr. Rajput, it has been more than 7 months since I published this review. Maruti Swift VDi has a refined diesel engine and has got sporty looks but at the same time it has less boot space and petrol version of MS vdi provides very less mileage, so I think buying Maruti Swift VDI diesel variant is the best option. Now Swift VXI is with K-Series Engine and i20 also came up with new model.
Would like to know your opinion on the same.
Whatever Hyundai comes up with, an Indian buyer buys Maruti cars most of the times because of its serviceability and old brand name. Regarding the K-series engines of both these care Swift VXI and i20, I think both are competing very well in the market with almost same specs so buying a car out of both is a little bit confusing. But as you already know the feel of i20's engine while driving is not so powerful like Swift, so you are a better judge. Why not you test drive both cars and note down points for both of them, compare them, and go ahead with your purchase. It's your money and you should invest it in the best thing.

Frankly speaking the diesel model of Tata Manza will be giving a mileage of 20km/pl on highway and 17 km/pl in city and petrol variant of Manza is giving a mileage of 14.5 on highway and 11 km/pl in city traffic.

New Swift 2011 features will be:
1. New Swift will be longer than Old Swift around 90 mm and also the wheelbase will be extra 50 mm.
2. It will be with the K-series engine.
3. Will be launched in autumn.
4. It will start from 772374 INR.
5. It will be the best Maruti car taking into consideration economy and fuel emissions.

I test rode both swift zxi & i20 asta and I am completely agree with your article.
I20 is very much underpowered. Currently I own a vagonR which is just 63BHP & i20 claims that it has 80 BHP. But I didn't feel any difference between the two in terms of power.
But swift rocks here. It really gives the feeling of 85BHP.
But except performance & milege i20 is the best. Otherwise swift rules.
Actually I have booked swift 2 weeks back & now planning to delay it until the new one get launched in Jan 11.

But I am surprised to hear the expected price you mentioned. All other sites tell the price would be just slightly above the old swift. So I dont expect a difference of more than 30K.

I am planing to buy a new car this Diwali. I like petrol engines and sorted Swift zxi/i20 Sportz/Punto 1.4 E.
I TD all the cars and found swift is more powerful than other two. But the interior is boring with same blackish dashboard and not up to the mark.
I am not choosing Punto because of company's A.S.S is pathetic.
So at the end my heart goes for i20 Sportz. I didn't feel the car is underpowered. I love this car at first sight. It has spacious interiors, bigger boot, great quality plastics, dashing electric ORVM with indicators, feel like a big sedan car.

I was about to buy i20 sportz but after going through this article I am a little confused...
- Do you think that i20sportz has a drastic difference in pickup compared to swift?
- On highways I drive my WagonR appx 125Km/hr with AC on and it gives good performance. Obviously i20/swift has more power so driving these cars in speed of 140km/hr will not be an issue, what do you think?
- What is the max/top speed of i20Sportz and Swift?

In my opinion i20 is far far better than swift...
I would prefer i20 because when i drove these 2 cars, i found neglgible diffrence b/w them. Instead i20 has a good interior also. JUST GO FOR i20
As per my thinking Maruti can't lead the race.
Hyundai is always in the topmost position and is ahead to other small cars. The coming i20 is one of the sporty model which I'm waiting to buy.

Even i would like to share some of my ideas.
As per my knowledge i20 is the BEST at its segment as compare to any car weather its swift / ritz / indica / Jazz etc etc.
i20 has more legroom as compare to swift and ritz. more boot space. more width space. good looks. and Build Quality exterior as well as interior..
As i agree with the power of the i20 is less as compare to swift.
there is a simple calculation is nothing but power to weight ratio.
i20 comes with 1.2 and 1.4 engine and swift comes with 1.3 engine it will totally unfare to compare with 1.3 engine with 1.2 engine and if you see the weight i20 is bulky then swift that's why u feel little bit underpowered. why don't u compare with 1.4 i20 with 1.3 swift?????????
and service wise maruti is best as its a local brand
Maruthi is famous for its cheep interior quality and cheep tricks..
No Power windows, no wheel caps, no coloured mirrors, no coloured door handel.. that's why they cost is also cheep...

i20 is the only car which gives u luxury feel. RITZ is no were in the picture if comparing to i20.
there are some feature like electronic mirror folding which u won;t even get in high end cars like Honda city and Toyota altis......

I have gone through your article & all the reviews. I think Swift is very nice car compare to i20 because recently I had test drive both the cars, I feel there is a vast difference in this both the cars from driving point.
Swift is much more better than i20 as per driving experience....& also has very decent look.
I had booked Swift 2011 & waiting for launching of this new rapper.
One question is in my mind that.....in one of your review you had mentioned price of swift2011 as starts from 772374 INR. its create much confusion to buy the same. If so then why people go for hatcback instead sedan cars like Dezire & SX4.
Old swift was costing from 4.5 to 5.35, my question is why so much hike in this new swift2011.
If the price you mentioned is confirmed then I have to switch over to Old swift will comes around 5.5 as a good deal for me in hatchback car.
One more thing why maruti not disclosing the launch as they had launched it in October10 in Hungary

Would like to make my suggestions as well:
Before comapring the cars decide what you really need. If you need a car that is stylish and comfortabe and want to show others, go for I20 and if you need Style and Power go for Swift.
There is one more that car that no one has mentioned which is Fiat Palio. I own a Swift petrol and Palio 1.9 D and i have driven I20 for more that 300Km at a stretch. I fell people who love driving long distances will like Swift and Palio much more than I20.
Personally i Love Palio than swift because it is powerfull, comfortable and Stable.

u should always opt for the i20 bcoz its a car which gives u speed and comfort at the same time. as we all know that how stupid maruti suzuki cars like ritz and a-star. so to get the best worth of your money go with the dashing i10.
Guys, You should also consider safety features of a car when deciding to buy one. Airbags should be main deciding factor & then comes the rest. If you drive any car within speed limits, then it would be safe for you & your family.

I think you should go for either Swift Lxi or i20 Era in that budget.

I can assume through your previous comment that you have a budget of 5 to 6.25 lakhs as you have mentioned about Ford Feista in that segment. If it's true, then you have many other options. First please clarify me about your budget, then I can tell you about a good maintenance free car. Also, regarding your query for i20, every machine in this world has some or other problem but as both these cars i20 and Swift are being owned by majority of people around India, then of course there will be lot of negative feedbacks as there are loads of positive feedbacks. The best way to land on the best deal is to take test drives of each and every car in your budget and buy the one which suits your needs. You are the best judge because it's your hard earned money that you are investing in buying a good vehicle for you and your family.

Dude, I own an I20. Its been more than 2 years now and still I absolutely love driving it. Recently, some rash Swift driver overtook me on a high way and I raced him for quite some time. My I20 overtook him quite easily and I was able to hold him for quite a long time till we decided to stop. Swift is a really boring car. Stereo is bad, interiors are all black and boring. Dash does not display anything interesting.

and according to me i agree with u that old swift dosnt hve gud interior but new swift is loadded with very very gud feature and damm gud interior.

hi, its been an year i have been driving i20 sportz petrol, n believe me its a great car. i m not a techno savvy but some results to share. in city i get somewhere near 14.5 to 15 kmpl n on highways goes up to 17. ppl talk about bhp n rpm so let me tell u on i have taken it upto 3500 rpm n that is suficient on indian roads. i travel a lot in himachal n never the car is equally responsive there too

i bought i-20 sports(alloy) last month...and truly speaking its really a pleasure to drive Hyundai cars. and its interior quality totally beats the Swift....and the handling is also good(butter).
and lots of people says tat it takes 14 sec. to catch 0-100km/h whether swift takes 12.5 sec.... but no one says about its maximum speed which is 175 km/h whether swift has 145 km/s so it beats swift in speed also...
its paint quality is really good...u had noticed that swift car gives its noise in interior after some time.so its interior quality is so bad and more scratches in its outsides color paint(due to poor paint quality).
maruti Suzuki is now afraid of i-20 market. that's why he relaunched the swift. but it still sucksssssss...in low leg space....
and maintenance is now equal for both companies due to competition.
so no doubt go for hyundai i-20 whether go for diesel or whether go for petrol...

Guys - I am a proud owner of the new i20 Magna diesel. I did quite a lot of research and read many discussions, that lead me to purchase i20. I bought it just a month ago and have driven 4000 kms within a month. Out of this experience I say, it is a Korean Crap!
i20 cant even come close to Swift when it comes to drive. I drive around 30kms per day to office in Bangalore and I get so tired changing the gears.
You would not believe - i20 struggles in 2nd gear. Imagine how would ur ride be if 2nd gear doesnt help.
i20 has its own pros, but when the ride is poor, nothing will count.
To conclude - I am a proud owner of i20 and I regret it everyday!

I don't have a car yet but reading this review i feel its 'This article is very biases'. Swift is a good car no question but i20 is none the less. Just try this, sit inside a swift and then in i20 and just tell which one feels better. I am sure you will like the i20 interior and its cabin space is bigger than the swift. i20 is costlier than swift but you get what you pay for i 20 is well eqipped. I want to point out one more thing on this review which is a blunder mistake they have the i30 image instead of i20. Please give importance to details accurately when you write a review. Thanks.
What ever, swift is the best vehicle ever in the indian markets, because of its unmatched performance and futuristic technology, which I think, would take a lot of time for the other vehicles to catch up with.

hey bro siddharth m srry to say u re little misconcept , i20 diesel crdi gives much more good performance then new swift i have both the cars and i have the real experience so just don't give ur wrong suggestions without any experience just have a test drive and feel it urself , i20 have 220 top speed , and i have drove it at 180 kph and it can go till 200 without much load and vibrations.

4 comfort- both are equal

6 handling- no doubt swift is mch mch better than i20
7 interior- depends upon taste accrdng to me swift is better
8 exterior- no doubt i20
9 resale value and network- everybody knows swift
overall swift is better if ur prioritty is safety space exterior and looks but if u wnt performance handling resale value pick up power thn go for swift

A great article with nice comparison between Maruti Swift and Hyundai I-20. I would prefer Swift instead of I-20 because it is of much less cost than I-20 and covers the Maruti guarantee and because serviceability of Maruti company is much more better than Hyundai.
