How to save money on electricity?
I was very frustrated a few months back because my electricity bill was ruining my life, as it was very high. The huge electricity bill, which comes every 56 days at my home, was disturbing the balance of my monthly household budget. I was very angry with this and finally contacted the BSES electricity department in my area and told them that I am not using this much electricity and you have some problems in your system or the bill is wrongly calculated. Now, you might be wondering what they told me? They told me that our system is totally okay and error free and it may be possible that you are not taking the necessary steps to lower your electricity bill and might be waisting it. So, I requested them to give me some tips so that I can lower my electricity bill. A senior manager at BSES Delhi then told me to take a piece of paper and write down some tips on saving electricity. I wrote down those tips on that bit of paper and started following them. Then what, it was a miracle for me. My electricity bill of August 2008 not only came down a little bit, but it came down to approximately 30% to 40%. I was so amazed with this. My family and me are so happy now that we are saving money on the electricity bill and the monthly budget is balanced.
Why I am sharing all this stuff with you?
When I was surfing hubpages yesterday, I found out a hub request "How to lower your electric bill? Mines is sky high!". Then, I decided why not share these tips, which have worked for me, with my fellow hubbers and the internet community, so that they can also save money on their high electricity bills.
I have elaborated these tips to make them easy to understand for you:
- Use good wiring, as old wiring needs to be changed at least in 10 years.
- Perfect earthing. If necessary, install a new copper earthing from meter to your house with zero leakage current. If there is a leakage of current, your meter is on for 24 hours. This is a good idea for saving power.
- At night before sleeping, completely switch off TV, DVD, music systems, etc. and remember not to put them on idle mode, again, TURN THEM OFF COMPLETELY.
- Use POT-type fan regulators instead of ROTARY-switch type.
- Use power saver lamps or CFLs (compact tube lights) which can be placed into BULB holders.
- Minimize use of microwaves, ovens, mixers, grinders, etc.
- Do not use washing machines daily, collect clothes for two to three days and then use the washing machine. In this way, electricity will be used only once in three days for washing your clothes.
- Switch off PC when not in use.
- Switch off monitors of your PC when you know that you have to again log in the system after 10 minutes or so.
- Clean the back of your refrigerator at least once in a month, this will reduce the dust on it, dissipating the heat generated by your refrigerator quite well, thereby increasing its efficiency and reducing your turning on your refrigerator's mode to coldest, thereby using less electricity, as turning coldest mode on consumes maximum energy whereas cold mode or the lowest mode is the energy saver mode.
- Always use the energy saver mode for air-conditioners, as this will use less energy and the room temperature will also remain constant. At night in summer months when there is more heat outside, the temperate is very high and you need to sleep for around 6 to 8 hours, switch your ACs temperature to the lowest degree and set its auto timer to 1 or 2 hours as you like. Close all the doors and windows ensuring there is no excessive air leak from any corner of your room. This will help in reducing or lowering power consumption on your air‑conditioning of the room, as after one hour or so, the AC will switch off but then also you will be in sound sleep and the temperature of the room will remain intact for around 6 hours or more.
- Instead of using vacuum cleaners twice or thrice in a month, use them only once in a month and vacuum clean all your furniture, like sofa upholstery, cots, beds, curtains, car seat covers, and chair fabrics once in a month.

How I managed to save more money on electricity bills?
In Delhi, it is a miracle that Electricity Providers have created a slab system and given the benefit of low bill system to the users who use or consume less electricity. My neighbors pay Rupees 2000 to 2500 INR per month whereas I pay Rupees 1000/1500 INR only. I am trying to bring my unit consumption further down, so that my electricity bill will be half only, i.e., Rupees 750 to 850 INR per month.
Now, People who are using less electricity are the only one who are benefited according to this slab system.
Hope the above tips will help you save money a bit more money on your electricity bills.

Yes I agree with you soni that the rates for BSES and others increase as per the per unit consumption. There is a slab made in which people using less electricity as in benefit whereas people who use more electricity pay more for their electricity bill. The steps you have mentioned sound to me really solid and full proof and I like the way again you have elaborated your tips in points. Thanks for creating such useful hubs.

The manager tells you all these? He must be really kind. Most managers prefer you to spend more money on the business so that they can get bigger bonus.
Hi! Very informative. Something I do easily, because I live alone, is turn my hot water heater on at the fuse box when I get home from work, have my bath, wash dishes, clothes, then turn it off. There's always hot water in the morning for breakfast dishes. It saves me about 25 percent.
Great Tips! Some of the Tips were new to me. I use to get huge electricity bills too But now what i get is very nominal charges because of smart usage.
Just found this hub while searching for a suitable hub to link from our hub "Save money on electricity bills". I like your hub because it illustrates that high electricity bills are a world-wide problem, and that most of us can do something to lower our costs. (And help the planet!)

My wife and I have been using Ambit Energy (Green-e Certified) for the past 3+ years and are very satisfied. We sign up for the 100% green plan which only uses electricity produced from wind power in Texas. We have saved over 30% just by switching providers. http://www.onlineambitenergy.com
Nice tips, I like the one about wiring. One to add to the list is to lower your hot water temperature. This is one of the biggest drains on your electricity.
i am being started to learn and share with the people how to go on with the energy-save activities. By type in several keywords during the searching, finally i get access to this site. Really i have get some just right stuff from your article. Thanks.
very nice ideas to save this message should be conveyed to public by an electricity saving campaign
Great thing demonstrated by figure and text which can help each one out here in the best way.We do have lighting on throughout the day so i would recommend to look for a good CFL(prob Havells) to save energy.
First of all thank you soni for sharing these tips a lot of people will benefit from these. may i please also note to everyone out there that its not always the way we handle our electricity usage. As important as utilising costs are.. sometimes your meter can be faulty eg old meter or wiring problem which soni explains. my advice is to ALWAYS keep NOTE OF YOUR READINGS ONCE A WEEK. As greedy as our providers are we ourselves are in control of how much we use. sometimes its even a case of the home you live in. some places are simply just bad builds and need major interior/exterior adjustments. Stay smart. swith off when not needed (religously). Dont be shy on comparing alternative providers now and then. And most importantly DONT WORRY ABOUT IT. We all have better things to enjoy in life other than an electricity bill. Get out more thats what humans are built for. Most of the time we dont even need electricity : ) thanks for reading
excellent guidance by you Sir..You have not only saved and educated yourself but also saved and educated many people here who are unaware about things and such tactics.i myself will try this out and seriously i believe that this will help me alot.Tahnxs alot for the valuable contribution and knowldeging people about their biggest problem(of saving their money in right way.) you must be awarded for this by some authorities.god bless you. Thanks a ton.
Thanks. It is difficult to remember to turn the heat down when exitting the house. Timed thermometers help you do this automatically.
Rajinder, this is a nice reminder. With electricity costs going up very fast it is imperative we devise new ways to save electricity. You have outlined some wonderful ways to save electricity. I always say electricity saved is electricity produced and money saved is money earned.
Voted up and useful and interesting.
Thanks. Very useful article.
This is a very helpful hub. with gas prices going up you will see the cost of electricity raising.

What I am worried about is these very high home energy and auto fuel prices sucking our money out of our country. Billions and billions. When this money leaves our country It never returns. How long can we pay until we are brought down to our knees. Is it a conspiracy. They say we have the oil and fuel but not enough refinery's . My goodness we better do something fast. Do you actually think I am kidding. Well I am not Buddy. Wake up America
