HGH abuse, side effects, and risks
79What is HGH?
Human growth hormone or somatotropin is a hormone that is produced in the body by the pituitary gland. Before this happens, growth hormone releasing hormone (HGH-RH) and somatostatin (SST) are released by the hypothalamus, and that determines whether more or less HGH is produced by the pituitary. Many factors influence the release of HGH, however, including nutrition and exercise.
Why it is used and how it is different from steroids?
It is obviously used to gain lean muscle mass, but in its effect and functioning in the body, it is pretty different from steroids. The main difference is that steroids cause muscle gain by the method of hypertrophy while HGH causes muscle gain by hyperplasia. Hypertrophy is a process in which every individual muscle cell size increases because of increased protein synthesis. On the other hand, hyperplasia is the process in which the number of muscle cell is increased and because of this, the muscle mass gained with HGH is almost permanent unlike steroids.
Side effects of HGH
Mostly, it is believed in the scientific crowd that HGH do not have any side-effects; however, there are a few rare un-welcomed effects which do appear. One common sideï·“effect might be "carpal tunnel syndrome" and this is a medical condition in which you feel numbness and a bit pain in hands and other side effect, which some people might not like, are increased bone width, enlargement of jaws, and enlargement of organs. Recently it is also discovered that some rare people might also get an increase in estrogen levels with taking this hormone, so in this case some anti-estrogen might be helpful, but the bright side of it is that there would not be any androgenic effects, no baldness, no redness of skin, no excessive water retention, etc. which are commonly seen in people using steroids and other chemical or herbal testosterone boosters.
More side effects of human growth hormone include undulated bone growth, particularly around the face, damage to the heart. In early 1990s, bodybuilders began appearing onstage with thick waistlines and distended bellies, which most experts have attributed to the use of this infamous HGH.
There has also been association of high levels of HGH and prostrate cancer but I do not mean that it really causes 100% cancer.
So it is highly inadvisable to go in for HGH or steroids. Take whey plus creatinine combo. That is the best.
Downsides of HGH
There are only two downsides of HGH when compared to steroids. First is that HGH are not as fast as steroids. They would not just suddenly bulk you up in 6 weeks. It takes time. The second one is that it is insanely expensive when compared to steroids and still half of the products available under the HGH label are not even real or pure.
Steroids are generally for hypertrophy (increase in size of cell or tissue) while growth hormones are for hyperplasia (increase in the number of cell or tissues), so hormones like testosterones increase the size of muscle tissue while growth hormones increases the number of muscle tissue.
That is how came the term "GH tummy" and it is referred to the modern bodybuilders with big tummy. Because of heavy intake of HGH and hyperplasia, the fascia of the abdomen becomes too large.
Risks of taking HGH
There are various risks of taking human growth hormone without medical supervision and they are just similar to risks of steroids, here is the complete list.
1. Body and facial acne.
2. People taking HGH can grow large breasts or medically known as gynecomastia (you grow.
3. Premature baldness.
4. Decrease in high density lipoprotein which is a good fat in our body.
5. Increase in low-density lipoprotein, it is the fat which causes severe heart disease.
6. Increase in cholesterol.
7. Addictive tendencies that mean a person taking it can become an HGH addict.
8. Thrombolytic disorders.
9. Aggressiveness, irritability, kidney dysfunction, liver tumor, liver dysfunction, testicular atrophy, pain with urination, decrease in sperm count, impotence which is the inability to make a complete erection as for having sex, prostatitis which is inflammation of the prostate gland, infertility, and premature closing of growth plates.
I believe it is better to prevent any chances of side effects instead of taking hGH then trying to tackle with the side effects- by totally avoiding this, you can prevent exposing your body to excess hGH when you can already synthesize the hGH you need as long as you know the proper technique.

Nice article. As usual the risks far outweigh the short terms benefits. Be natural!
Hi Soni: That was real scary. I guess the actors in Hollywood / Bollywood are always under constant pressure to look fab but I did notice one strange thing about them (those who are on such self induced growth hormones / steroids)...they look awful as they grow older. I wonder if it has something to do with the artificially induced mechanisms. This hub was an eye opener. :)
Thanks Soni, as much as I was involved in the gym portion of body building, I never knew about this part.
Well written hub informing those who may want to look great and knowing what the trade off is with the use of HGH.
Hi,
informative hub discussing pros and cons of the medicinal hormone. Pictures are relevant. Thumbs up.

I never knew the side effects of HGH were so bad. Good thing I never used nor endorse Performance enhancing drugs (PED)
The bad side effects only occur when you take too much of the HGH, right?..
hgh all the way
i was thinking about taking them idk now tho...a lot of kids are doing it at my school.
Interesting read. I searched for side effects after my second week on HGH product. My left wrist has been hurting (carpal tunnel pain). I am going to stop taking the supplement to see if the pain subsides. I will post again in a week if that is the case.
