Many tumors that develop in the breasts are not always cancerous and most of them are benign and occur because of fibrocystic formations in the breasts. But some of them are cancerous and can spread to other parts of the body if not treated on time. Below is a brief classification of different types of breast cancers for women awareness.
Ductal Carcinoma In Situ or DICU:
In situ ductal carcinoma develops in the cell walls of ducts in breasts. It is a very localized cancer that has not spread or has metastasized to other areas. For this reason, this disease “premalignant” can be removed easily via breast removal surgery or mastectomy. The cure rate of DICUs is close to 100%. These tumors can be easily detected on mammographies.
Infiltrating Ductal Carcinoma or IDC:
The infiltrating ductal carcinoma of breasts is an invasive type of tumor, which starts from the milk ducts in the breasts and then keeps on spreading through the adipose tissue of breasts to various parts of women body. Unfortunately, this is the most common form of breast cancers occurring in approximately 80% of patients around the globe.
Lobular Carcinoma In Situ or LCIS:
LCIS starts from the mammary glands (breast lobes) of female breasts. According to some recent studies, this tumor is not a true cancer and is a benign one but unfortunately this can also turn into a cancerous tumor in future if not treated on time. Lobular carcinoma is the most common form of premenopausal breast cancers, which has remained a mystery despite several efforts by doctors to understand its origination before the cessation of menses. Once lobular carcinoma is detected, the most important step for the women is to undergo a screening mammography on an annual basis. Doctors also perform different types of cancer detection tests to monitor its growth.
Infiltrating Lobular Carcinoma or ILC:
ILC is a much serious form of invasive lobular carcinomas, as it starts from the mammary glands and spreads to various other body parts and tissues. Between 10% and 15% of breast cancers are of ILC type. This invasive carcinoma is not easy to be detected on mammograms.
Inflammatory Carcinoma or IC:
This inflammatory type is a most rare type of breast cancers, which has been detected in only 1% of all breast cancer patients around the world. Inflammatory types of breast cancers are aggressive and grow at a rapid rate giving little time for patient’s survival. The breast skin turns bluish in color with increased temperature. The patient also experiences bumps and wrinkles on the breast.
So this was something on different kinds of breast cancers. In the upcoming articles, I will put light on causes and symptoms of breast cancer and will share knowledge on how to deal with breast CA, and how doctors detect and treat this cancer with various types of anticancer drugs and surgeries.
