In terms of technical specifications, Maruti Swift Diesel is a four cylinder car whereas Skoda Fabia is a three cylinder car but both are equivalent in terms of power and performance. Rather, Fabia is approximately 1 lakh or more costlier than Swift.
Of course Skoda Fabia's built quality and the brand name itself market it. In addition to that, high-end multi jet engine with all the qualities makes Fabia the superstar, but I am not quite sure of one thing that whether Indian market will accept 6.5 to 7 lakhs hatch of Fabia? One more thing, we need to consider here is the brand image. Maruti has got a good reach across India. Though Fabia is technically better than Swift, it cannot beat Swift in sales.
The Swift Diesel is already a hit and has gone a long way. Both cars have got good engineering speculations. Though I believe that Fabia will be costlier to purchase and maintain. Considering these two factors, Swift is outperforming Fabia in sales chart. The Fabia has a less powerful engine than Swift and the version available abroad has lower performance than our Swift here. Hence, I guess Swift will leave no space for the Skoda to sell in Indian market. I really doubt that Skoda will come out as a superstar mainly because first the engines of Fabia will cost more and second Skoda will not be able to cash on excise duty cut which applies to petrol car less than 1200 cc and diesel cars less than 1500 cc, besides that is the whole reason why Maruti launched sub 1500 cc diesel engine, though they initially planned 1600 cc engine for it.
Now the big question comes that how Fabia is compared with Swift. The Swift looks better and the main question is the price. The basic version of the Fabia costs around 7,50,000 on road as compared to 580,000 for the VDI + ABS for Swift.
The top end in the Fabia diesel goes above 9 lakhs and surprisingly Skoda has only one variant in Petrol, i.e., the top end which costs around 8 lakhs.
In any event, with 7.55 lakhs as the starting price, Fabia is going to find it hard to eat much into the Swift's sales.
Besides that, Fabia Diesel is a serious competition to Swift. Yes, price is an advantage for Swift and maintenance too. It seems the price of the Skoda Fabia is a big letdown, as it starts from 7,50,000 lakhs.
There are four variants of Fabia. The cheapest variant is Fabia Active, after that comes Fabia Classic, Fabia Ambiente, and Fabia Elegance. Fabia Active does not have power windows. Skoda realized that people have problems with the pricing when compared to Swift, so they came up with a cheaper one, i.e., Active.
And between, petrol cars will obviously be cheaper than diesel cars. That is how it works. With diesel, you get better fuel efficiency but a rougher ride and petrol is smoother. Those who go for diesel pay more initially but it is cheaper in the long run.
The prices are way too high for Fabia. I think Skoda got the pricing for Fabia wrong. One cannot sell a hatchback for 8 lakhs here in India. I think they are competing with Honda City, Hyundai Verna, and Maruti SX4 in terms of price.
Swift Diesel is more powerful and better.

Compression Ratio is 17.6:1. 9. Number of cylinders = four cylinders. 10. Cylinder Configuration is Inline. 11. Valves per cylinder = four valves.
Besides this, we are not just sitting on the engine without wheels and driving it, we are driving the whole car. There are many other things to it, also considering performance after some time, when the engine is not new. My neighbor who is a chartered accountant has both, Swift Diesel for himself and Fabia for his wife. They know very well how capable each one is.
So build, quality, safety, comfort, ease of use, good space planning, better tires, more planted feel, etc. are not as important as PRICE for most of the people in India. It is just important for a few people. Maybe it is only for high upper class people.
One more thing to add is that a Swift could be serviced with a number of Maruti Service Centers in India. In case of Skoda, try to get in touch with their service other than the urban locales and you will feel the difference. Here comes Maruti's biggest advantage which is their service network and cost of spares in the long run. The Skoda's service centers are less in India when compared to Maruti.
Yes Swift's engine is the best and Fabia is also not bad, as it comes with a pump duse technology. Do not see the bhp and torque, it is only a number game. At the end of the day if you are comfortable and the car you travel fetched you a good brand image that is all. So I think the best diesel car when compared with pricing, service centers, and everything else, Maruti Swift is better and ROCKS long time..............

swift diesel is best because it has very good torque which wins over the fabia as well as i have driven both of them but the smooth driving pleasure which i got form was the swift!mileage of the swift is also very good my dealer told me it gives 14km/lit. Although The fabia has got very good interiors & some other features which are meant only for the luxury but the swift gives Value For Money apart of that which i felt in my swift that it has better displacement than the fabia!

Maruti swift as we all know is the market
leader in its segment. People fall in love with
it by seeing its looks, its muscular power
and its performance. How ever, there are
some setbacks in this car too. These
problems discussed below are compiled
together from experiences of many Swift
owners.
The first problem that needs to be
mentioned is the rattling problem that
people buying Swift are worried about the
most. I admit that there is a rattling noise in
Swift and it’s not from a single place but
from various interior parts of its body. The
most profound noise comes from the front
left door when the vehicle is on a move and
can be clearly heard even when there is a
music being played in the car. The electric
windows ( power windows) are said to be
the cause for this noise and Maruti did
replace some power windows. Another
rattling sound comes from the driver side B
pillar and a rattling sound emanates from
inside the dashboard for some odd reasons.
The plastics inside the car aren’t that of a
quality which makes the noise even louder.
Because of the rally look a like of the car, the
suspensions are a bit too stiff (heavy) that
makes an itchy noise when the car goes
through potholes slowly.
The common gear shift problem observed in
all Maruti cars these days exists in this one
too. People find it difficult to change the
gears from 1st to 2nd and the reverse gear
almost seems to go into the wrong groove
every first time when applied. You have to
undo the reverse gear and re-do it several
times to get that shaft engage properly, else
it makes a loud cranky noise. But Swift
owners say that this problem eases off as
your car gets to tick some mileage (5000
kms or so).
The shape of the car is bit odd on the sides
and if you observe it by using your rear
view mirrors (RVM’s) you find that the sides
are not straight. The result, parking
becomes a bit tricky especially if you use
RVM’s exclusively. The rear Windscreen
being very small adds to your difficulty even
more.
The paint finish of the car is too smooth and
it is not something to be cheered for. A small
hairline scratch also seems as if seen
through a magnifier.
All owners agree that the back seat is a bit
cramped compared to its Hyundai rival Getz.
Another issue is the A pillar obstructing the
view of the driver during the right side
turns. Although this issue prevails in every
other car, due to a very broad looking A
pillar in Swift it seems more profound. And if
you have a complete black film to your
windows, you can rest assure that you’re D
day is on its way
Having said all these, the bottom line is that,
all swift owners feel very proud about their
selection and unanimously agree that there
is no better option in this category.
So you know which one to choose I guess.

I was driving Shift Diesel as well Skoda Fabia. You know, both car design inspire or copy from Mini Cooper (org. design by British Motor Corporation and now part of BMW). I am also car lover since my childhood time. As per my point of view Fabia is the best….Indian mentality is like ek na laya to proven he hoga….why we take a risk….aaj jo baat maruti ka laya ho raha tha wahe word 25 year back fiat ka laya use hota tha. When maruti was new (1987-88) tub log aapas ma bata kar ta tha ke (maruti marva mata and fait farva mata) but now this is old story. As per my point of view Shift has a design problem, when you take reverse (only see 3 mirror) u cannot park properly because of back glass. Back vision is not clear. In India, people are not watching all 3 mirror n drive or you can say only 5% people have a good driving scenes. All other people don’t know or visualize this problem. So, please drive shift in reverse (see only mirror and drive) then you realize real problem.

i own a skoda fabia and m glad to be a owner of this car. noone can beat it. fabia me 1200 cc ka engine hai but because of german technologies, i took it above 160 kmph. ek swift waala bechaara nikaalne ki koshish kar raha tha but nikal nahi paaya. sad but true for all swift owners.
atlast, we cant call swift the worst car, its the best autorikshaw of india :P

Maruti Suzuki Swift is really an amazing car mostly preferred in Indian market. It is pretty hatchback model which gives easy drive in heavy traffic!!

As per my knowledge, observation & experiences swift zdi is better than fabia elegance diesel in price & maitenance but 6 months waiting time of swift zdi is more than that.My opinion except these all other are better in fabia in respect of swift.6 months waiting time cost will recover all.
